Laos--Christians Arrested During Christmas Service

2 Corinthians 13:14

Seven Christian leaders remain in prison after authorities raided their Christmas gathering in Boukham village, Laos. Under orders from the village chief, authorities raided the home where the Christians were celebrating Christmas on Friday, Dec. 16. They arrested eight Christian leaders and took them to the village government house. Authorities accused the Christians of violating village law by holding a Christian service that offended the village's traditional spirit religion. A representative of the Savannakhet Lao Evangelical Church (LEC), which is recognized by the government, attempted unsuccessfully to obtain the Christians' release the day after their arrest. The LEC deputy chairman paid 1 million kip ($125, or about three months' pay) for the release of Kingnamosorn, one of the imprisoned believers. The remaining seven were asked to admit guilt. When they refused, authorities placed their feet in stocks. "Their situation will likely get worse unless we have God's intervention," wrote a VOM contact. In 2008, three Christians were imprisoned for three months in Boukham village and were threatened with life imprisonment if they did not recant their Christian faith. Pray that the seven prisoners will be released and will have sweet communion with God while in prison.

India--Pastor Released from Prison

Deuteronomy 31:6

A pastor who was arrested and imprisoned in October on false charges of forced conversion in the Kashmir Valley has been released from jail on bail. A Muslim cleric, the Grand Mufti, had asked Reverend C. M. Khanna to help a student gain admission to a school run by the Church of North India. When Rev. Khanna was unable to help, it is believed that the Grand Mufti retaliated by having him summoned to appear before the Sharia court. He was charged with forced conversion based on video of a routine baptism ceremony in his church. Rev. Khanna voluntarily appeared before the Sharia court in the Kashmir Valley, even though he could not be legally bound to appear before a Muslim court in a secular country like India. Rev. Khanna's arrest has caused great fear among believers, according to local sources. Please pray that Rev. Khanna's courage and faith during his ordeal will be a testimony to others.

Turkey--Malatya Murderers Could Be Freed
Source: Middle East Concern

Isaiah 9:7

The five men accused of killing three Christians in Malatya, Turkey, could be freed if they are not convicted by April 2012. Under Turkish law, those accused of a crime must be set free if they are not convicted and sentenced within five years. The trial for the men accused of killing Necati Aydin, Ugur Yuksel and Tilmann Geske began in November 2007 and has been mired in complications ever since. The next hearing is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2012, and delays beyond April 2012 could lead to the release of the five men. Pray that friends and families of the Malatya victims will know the peace of Jesus and that justice will be done.

South Sudan--Attacks Continue in Border Region

Psalm 20:1

Sudan and South Sudan appear to be on the brink of war as security in the border region continues to deteriorate. Sudan continues to attack and bomb areas along the border, including areas inside the new sovereign nation of South Sudan. The border region is home to vast natural resources as well as majority-Christian ethnic groups. "We are following this situation very closely as we plan projects and outreaches to respond to the crisis and encourage the persecuted church in the Nuba Mountain region," wrote a VOM field worker. In early December, Christian aid organizations serving refugee communities along the border were forced to evacuate their field workers because of intense aerial bombing and shelling by Sudan. Members of AIM Air, who transport aid to the refugee communities, said the biggest obstacles affecting relief efforts are the bombing, shelling and fighting in Jau and Yidra, communities inside South Sudan. These regions are home to the largest Christian community in South Sudan and Sudan. More than 300,000 people have been displaced by the conflict, which began on June 6, 2011. Please pray that God will continue to sustain his people there.

Yemen--Kidnapped Aid Workers Still Missing
Source: Praying Through the Arabian Peninsula

Psalm 38:15

Four of nine foreigners kidnapped in Saada, northwest Yemen, are still missing two and a half years after their abduction. Among the nine were a German doctor, his wife and their three children; a British man and his South Korean wife; and two German women. The six adults had been working as aid workers in a hospital in Saada. Three of the women were found dead shortly after their abduction, and two of the children were freed on May 17, 2010. The welfare and whereabouts of the German couple, Johannes and Sabine, their 3-year-old son, Simon, and the British man, Tony, are unknown. Those close to the situation are hopeful that the transfer of power from President Saleh to the vice president and the formation of a unity government will lead to a release of information about the missing foreigners. However, the political situation in Yemen has not improved, and protests and violent clashes continue. Pray that the missing four are still alive and that information on their welfare might be released. Pray for their families, especially for Johannes and Sabine's 5-year-old and 7-year-old daughters, who are with relatives in Germany.

Syria--Christians Prepare for Christmas amid Lockdown

Luke 2:10

As Christians around the world prepare to celebrate Christ's birth, Christians in the Syrian city of Homs are afraid to leave their homes. "Troops are surrounding the city, and people don't go out of their houses, as they will get shot," said a VOM-supported evangelist. Another VOM contact who lives in the city said, "Everyone is afraid of huge massacres and ethnic violence. There has been no electricity for a week and no fuel for heating. No one goes out because he will die. Really, it's a terrible situation. Anyway, we trust that Emmanuel is still with us. Please pray for the peace of Christ to enter the hearts of the people in Homs."

Mysterious Christmas Poem Discovered in a 190-Year-Old eReader

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 04:47 PM PST

Experts are befuddled by the discovery of an antique eReading device and its bizarre contents, a poem that appears to be the original version of the classic "Twas the Night Before Christmas" written in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore. Oddities in this alleged version of Moore's poem include "reincamels" instead of reindeer, and surprisingly accurate details on a current "Load Your eReader Sale" from Zondervan. (Learn more about this eBook and Bible sale at http://zndr.vn/s8klMl).

"The poem is a hoax," claims the foremost historian of eReading, Dr. Heim Pullenure-Legg. "How in blue blazes could Moore have known about eReaders, let alone a specific sale on eBooks from Zondervan, nearly two hundred years before the eBook's advent? Someone alive today must have faked the poem and the eReader!"

The eReader in question was discovered within this antique sugar plums box
The eReader was discovered within this antique sugar plums box.

Dr. Pullenure-Legg's logic is strong, but forensic evidence is stacking up against him. "This eReading device is certainly over 185 years old," says forensics specialist Imogene Aryfriend. "What's more, we've found DNA from Clement Clarke Moore on the touchscreen." The touchscreen in question is made of stained glass, while the body of the device is carved from an extinct species of cherry tree that was last seen in Moore's day. These facts and more have persuaded some that the eReader and the poem are authentic. But there's a loose end...

"You see how the poem's references to "reindeer" are replaced by "reincamels"? That's a dead giveaway," observes historical zoologist I. M. Knottreel. "Raincamels weren't introduced to the New World until their debut in the Ringling Bros. Circus in 1907. That's about 40 years after Moore's death, so there is no chance Moore wrote this poem."

Other explanations abound. "It was time travel!" says the speculative philosopher known as Bo Gus. "Moore predicted the future," asserts philosopher Jacque Fraidso. "Moore's not special, it's all just coincidence," says a philosopher who is also named Jacque Fraidso.

Who can we believe? Is the eReader authentic, but the poem a hoax? Or vice versa? Or are both phony? The scholars may never reach consensus, but they all agree on this point: Zondervan's "Load Your eReader Sale" is quite real, and you can see for yourself at http://zndr.vn/s8klMl.

An Excerpt from the Poem in Question, "Twas Christmas Vaction"

Twas Christmas vacation and all through the edifice,
Ev'ry creature was enjoying their eReading-device.
I even placed a Kindle Fire in the chimney with care,
And we all shared a good laugh at the visual pun there!

Later the kids nestled all snug in their places,
iPhone and iPad screens alighting their faces.
And Mamma with her Kindle and I with my Nook,
Were settling our brains in our favorite eBooks.

When up on the roof there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter...

[Several of the next stanzas are identical to the version we all know. Major changes begin again with the appearance of St. Nick:]

No bundle of Toys had St. Nick on his back,
He just browsed on a tablet, clicking this, clicking that.
Without speaking a word he visited zndr.vn/s8klMl
And purchased eBooks and Bibles for his reincamels,
Plus several kids' books for the children in my family,
And nonfiction for my Mamma, and some novels for me.

From the roof we heard reincamels twinkling their toes,
And St. Nick laid his finger aside of his nose,
He gave me a nod, and up the chimney he rose!
But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he flew out of view,
"Happy Christmas to all, and good reading to you!"

About Clement Clarke Moore

Clement Clarke Moore

Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863) was an American college and seminary professor who allegedly composed the poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." Moore may or may not have invented primitive eReaders, traveled through time, or witnessed the rare reincamel. If you possess any information on these matters, please leave a comment on this post.

Gathering together with almost 50,000 people from all over the world to study God’s Word and pray for persecuted believers has deeply affected many of you who participated.  We would like to share some of the stories we have received from our time together this past November.

Scott’s Story…

I just watched Secret Church last night for the first time. All I can say I learned more about life in 7 hours than I’ve learned in the 38 years of life I’ve endured. Thank you so much David Platt. I will definately be attending the next Secret Church.I was so thankful to be able to watch via simulcast. I will be applying the material I learned last night to my life. I’m so happy to be a Christian and my heart goes out to the persecuted. God willing I hope to be able to share my experience with the suffering and the slaves of sin. God bless.

Watch "Song of the Stars" Christmas Party Videos

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 11:03 AM PST

Last week's Song of Stars Live Christmas Party with Sally Lloyd-Jones was such a joy that I'm still thinking about it.

Sally read her new Song of the Stars Christmas storybook and answered questions from our online party guests. Also, we watched Christmas song performances from many of Sally's super-talented musician friends.

Now you can watch those song performances from the party, plus some bonus videos we didn't show, when you visit the Zonderkidz Song of the Stars Video Playlist.

You will find performances from Jason Gray, Ellie & Drew Holcomb, Katy Bowser & Kenny Hutson, Randall Goodgame, and a lot more.

2 Highlights from the Song of the Stars Party

1. Cutest Moment
Two-year-old Carter McCracken sings "Happy Birthday" to Jesus. Sweeter than any Christmas cookie, this video will bring tears of joy, guaranteed.

2. Most Captivating Moment
As Sally read Song of Stars, the story and pictures made me see Christmas with a child's eyes all over again. I became like one of the animals on this page:

"The One who made us has come to live with us," the animals say with awe. The story reminded me how the incarnation is full of profound mystery, but also a  crystal-clear picture of the lengths God will go to in order to love us and take care of us.

I would like to leave you with Sally's parting speech:

"Just think... 'The One who made us has come to live with us.' What an incredible story we're part of. How wonderful we have a God who loves us so much that he came to rescue us. So... I hope your Advent is filled with the wonder of this story that even the angels don't tire of."

With Sally Lloyd-Jones and my coworkers, I wish you a Happy Christmas!

Quitting the Ghastly Circus: Reflections on the Late Christopher Hitchens, His Brother Peter's Memoir, and Religious Rage

Posted: 16 Dec 2011 12:49 PM PST

Christopher Hitchens passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2011. (For any who may not be familiar with Hitchens, he was a celebrated journalist, a bestselling author, and an outspoken atheist.) When I heard the news I turned with interest to the Zondervan-published memoir by Mr. Hitchens' brother, Peter, titled The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith, where I discovered a slice of the brothers' story that is especially poignant today.

Learn more about The Rage Against God
Learn More

Below you'll find Peter Hitchens' reflections on a public debate on religion with his brother Christopher, a debate which Peter later described as a "ghastly circus."

Unfortunately, "ghastly circus" apt describes some of the purportedly "Christian" discussion surrounding Christopher's death. So I publish this post for three reasons. First, I want to respectfully say to Christopher's family that I am praying for them.

Second, I am reminded by Peter's thoughtful reflection that Christopher Hitchens was someone's brother, someone's son, and like every person loved or unloved by their fellows, Christopher Hitchens, too, was lovingly made in the image of his Creator.

And third, I challeng myself and anyone reading this far: follow the guidance of the Apostle Peter as we comment on the legacy of Christopher Hitchens: "Dear friends, I urge you ... Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us" (1 Peter 2:11-12).
- Adam Forrest, Zondervan Internet Team.
Special thanks to Matt Saganski and Rich Tatum.

From Rage Against God

I end this book in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with some thoughts on the unsatisfactory debate that I had there in April 2008, with my brother Christopher, about the existence of God and the goodness of religion. I had decided before it took place that I would not take part in such a debate again, on this or any other subject.

Christopher and I have had over the past fifty years what might be called a difficult relationship. Some brothers get along; some do not. We were the sort who just didn't. (Parents of such siblings will know about this.)

Who knows why? At one stage — I was about nine, he nearly twelve — my poor gentle father actually persuaded us to sign a peace treaty in the hope of halting our feud. I can still picture this doomed pact in its red frame, briefly hanging on the wall. To my shame, I was the one who repudiated it, ripped it from its frame, and angrily erased my signature before recommencing hostilities. In a way, the treaty has remained broken ever since, and heaven knows what happened to the sad little document.

I had already concluded, as my train nosed westward in the spring twilight through the lovely, wistful mountain and river country that lies between Harper's Ferry and Pittsburgh, that I did not want to do anything of the kind. Normally I love to argue in front of audiences. This time I seemed to have no taste for it.

No doubt they would have been pleased or entertained if we had pelted each other with slime in Grand Rapids.

Something far more important than a debate had happened a few days before, when Christopher and I had met in his apartment in Washington, D.C. If he despised and loathed me for my Christian beliefs, he wasn't showing it. We were more than civil, treating each other as equals — and as brothers with a common childhood, even recalling bicycle rides we used to take together on summer days in the Sussex Downs, unimaginably long ago, which I did not even realize he still remembered. And here is another thing. When our Grand Rapids hosts chose the date of April 3 for this debate, they had no way of knowing that it was the sixty-third anniversary of our parents' wedding — an optimistic, happy day in the last weeks of what had been for both of them a fairly grim war. Not all the optimism was justified, and with the blessed hindsight of parenthood, I cannot imagine that our long fraternal squabble did much for their later happiness. They are, alas, long gone, but my brother and I had both independently become a little concerned at how we should conduct ourselves on such a day.

We had each reached the conclusion, unbidden, that we did not want this to turn into a regular traveling circus, becoming steadily more phony as it progressed around the circuit.

Perhaps I had begun to suspect that something had shifted during our evening in Washington. To my open astonishment, Christopher even cooked supper, a domesticated action so unexpected that I still haven't got over it. It would be almost as unsettling to come across Mick Jagger living in a Florida retirement community or President Obama attending a meeting of the National Rifle Association. If Christopher is going to take up roasting legs of lamb at this stage in his life, then what else might be possible?

My brother had even given up smoking — a man who once smoked so much, so intensely and with such incessant dedication that one observer wondered if he was doing it simply to keep warm. I am not hoping for a late conversion because he has won a successful battle against cigarettes. He has bricked himself up high in his atheist tower, with slits instead of windows from which to shoot arrows at the faithful, and he would find it rather hard to climb down out of it. But I have the more modest hope that he might one day arrive at some sort of acceptance that belief in God is not necessarily a character fault — and that religion does not poison everything. Beyond that, I can only say that those who choose to argue in prose, even if it is very good prose, are unlikely to be receptive to a case that is most effectively couched in poetry.

Christopher and I had been in public arguments before. We had had the occasional clash on TV or radio. We had debated the legacy of the Sixties, in a more evenly matched encounter than Grand Rapids, eleven years earlier in London. Not long after that, there had been a long, unrewarding falling-out over something I had said about politics. Both of us were urged by others to end this quarrel and eventually, if rather tentatively, did so.

When I attacked his book against God, some people seemed almost to hope that our personal public squabble would begin again. No doubt they would have been pleased or entertained if we had pelted each other with slime in Grand Rapids. But despite one or two low blows exchanged in the heat of the moment, I do not think we did much to satisfy them. I hope not. At the end I concluded that, while the audience perhaps had not noticed, we had ended the evening on better terms than either of us might have expected. This was — and remains — more important to me than the debate itself.

So I will say this. On this my brother and I agree: that independence of mind is immensely precious, and that we should try to tell the truth in clear English even if we are disliked for doing so. Oddly enough this leads us, in many things, to be far closer than most people think we are on some questions — closer, sometimes, than we would particularly wish to be. The same paradox sometimes also makes us arrive at different conclusions from very similar arguments, which is easier than it might appear. This will not make us close friends at this stage. We are two utterly different men approaching the ends of two intensely separate lives. Let us not be sentimental here, nor rashly over-optimistic.

But I was astonished, on that spring evening by the Grand River, to find that — in the middle of what was supposed to be a ruthless, jeering clash of opposed minds — the longest quarrel of my life seemed unexpectedly to be over, so many years and so many thousands of miles after it had started, in our quiet homes and our first beginnings in an England now impossibly remote from us. It may actually be true, as I have long hoped it would be, that "the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time."

Romans 9:7-9

A regime change in Syria would almost certainly have negative effects on Christians, according to observers of the country's political situation. The Syrian uprising is "not about 'democracy' as the West knows it," wrote Elisabeth Kendal in the Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin. "It is about restoring [Sunni Muslim domination], Arab hegemony and the Islamic order to Syria." During the uprising, Syrian Christians have been forced from their homes and Christian businesses burned. Protestors at one event reportedly chanted, "The Alawites to the grave and the Christians to Beirut." While VOM-supported evangelists have long faced harassment and other difficulties while sharing the gospel, many fear that a change in Syria's leadership could raise anti-Christian persecution to levels seen in Iran. Please pray for the protection and perseverance of God's children in Syria.

Uzbekistan--Christians Warned to Stop Evangelism
Source: Forum 18 News

Exodus 18:7-9

Authorities in Angren, Uzbekistan, warned local churches in November to cease proselytism and missionary activities and to stop allowing children to participate in worship meetings. The deputy head of the administration delivered the warning to representatives of the Catholic, Russian Orthodox, Presbyterian, Seventh-Day Adventist and Baptist churches on Nov. 2. In addition to being warned about evangelistic work, the church representatives were asked for lists of their churches' members. Area Christians said they will continue to teach their children about their faith. Pray for Christians in Uzbekistan, who face intense pressure from the government.

Burma (Myanmar)--More Violence Against Christian Minority
Sources: Compass Direct News, Kachin News Group

Psalm 149:6-9

Burmese government troops killed civilians, burned houses and arrested a Christian couple in the Christian-majority Kachin state recently. On Wednesday, Nov. 30, one woman was killed and six other villagers injured as soldiers fired four rounds of mortar shells toward civilians in the Tarlawgyi area. Government troops also burned down 10 homes in Nam Wai village and five more in neighboring Hpa Ke village. The attacks followed two explosions that occurred the previous night in the state's capital, Myitkyina, in which one student died and another was injured. Local residents suspect that government agents planted the bombs. Two weeks earlier, on Nov. 13, a powerful explosion killed seven children and three displaced people and injured 16 other children at an orphanage in Myitkyina. Police arrested the Christian couple who run the orphanage in connection with the bombing, even though two of their sons and a grandson were among those killed. The attacks have left civilians in Kachin terrified. An estimated 90 percent of Kachin citizens are Christian. Pray that the government will respond to the needs of Christians in Burma.
