NEW! Live Spanish Simulcast Feed for SC13

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 03:00 AM PST

We’re excited to announce that the Secret Church simulcast will be available in English AND Spanish for the first time ever on Good Friday, March 29, 2013!

If this would serve you, your church, or someone that you know, it works the same way as the English simulcast.

  • Register online at LifeWay.com/SecretChurch.
  • Set up your simulcast account. (Directions are here.)
  • Invite your friends to attend the simulcast in your home or church.
  • On the night of the simulcast, log in to your account and choose the Spanish button (instead of the English button).

It really is that simple. Pastor David will be teaching in English, and a translator will be translating into Spanish, which will then be broadcast worldwide.

Unfortunately, the promotional and prep materials in the simulcast accounts won’t be available in Spanish (due to the limited amount of time remaining before Secret Church). However, a PDF version of the Spanish study guide will be available for download several days prior to the simulcast.

Please help us spread the word about this new option by sharing this info with your Spanish-speaking friends or ministries you know of. We’d love for as many as possible to join us for “Iglesia Secreta”!

1 Chronicles 28:20

Islamists attacked churches in South Sulawesi with Molotov cocktails on Feb. 10 and again on Feb. 14, for a total of five attacks. The churches attacked included the Makassar Indonesian Church, Panakkukang Toraja Klasis Church, Toraja Klasis Tallo Church, the Tiatira Church and the Toraja Mamasa Church. Several buildings sustained damage, but no injuries were reported. Police determined that all five attacks were carried out by the same group. Closed-circuit televisions at one of the churches recorded video of four people on two motorcycles hurling homemade bombs at the church. Members of the Islamic Defenders Front visited the Damai Kristus Catholic church on Friday, Feb. 15, and warned them of similar consequences if they continued to meet. All of the attacked churches held services on Sunday, Feb. 17, despite the threats. The Jakarta Christian Communications Forum has reported an increase in the number of threats against churches since 2009. There were 75 cases reported in 2012, up from 64 the previous year.

Laos--Three Pastors Arrested for Making Copies of Christian Movie

Psalm 27:12-13

Police in Savannakhet province have held three pastors since Feb. 5 on suspicion of "spreading Christianity" because the pastors made copies of a Christian movie at a local duplication shop. After making three copies of the movie, the shop owner tested one of the DVDs and ended up watching the entire video along with the three pastors. A policeman who saw what they were watching reported them to the local police lieutenant, and the pastors and shop owner were arrested. The shop owner was later released, but authorities insist that the pastors were spreading the Christian religion portrayed in the movie. The pastors, who lead three different churches in the area, say the copies were for personal use. The movie is available in shops throughout Laos.

Eritrea--Number of Christians Arrested in January Rises to 50
Source: Release International

Genesis 39:20b-21

The number of Christians arrested in Asmara, the Eritrean capital, last month is now up to 50. All of the believers, detained since mid-January, are still being held, and most are church leaders. Thirty believers were arrested on Jan. 20 at a worship meeting of the Philadelphia church held in a private home. One of those arrested was an 85-year-old woman, who was also accused of hosting Bible study groups in her home. The raids were described as "well-planned and targeting Bible study leaders." The imprisoned Christians are being held in the notorious Karchele security prison in Asmara.

What Do We Expect? Part 4 of 4

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 02:00 AM PST

We’re concluding a four-part series in which Pastor David Platt instructs our prayers for the persecuted from the book of Acts. If you missed part 1 – “Why Do We Pray?”part 2 – “Who Do We Pray To?”, or part 3 – “What Do We Pray For?”, we invite you to check them out.

In what was the worst persecution believers had experienced up to that point, Peter and John were thrown into prison for proclaiming Christ. Immediately upon their release, amidst increasing disapproval from outside authorities, the believers prayed the words now found in Acts 4:24-31. Teaching from this passage, Pastor David now answers the question, “What do we expect?”

World Watch List

World Watch List of countries in which Christians are most persecuted.

‘Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, ”Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed”— for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’ And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness (Acts 4:24-31).

_________________________________________________________________

What Do We Expect?

What do you expect when you pray like the believers in Acts 4 did? What happened in Acts 4 and what happens today when we really pray like that? I think three main things happened in this passage. And it's pretty awesome – they all parallel what had happened just two chapters before when the Holy Spirit came down at Pentecost.

Number one, expect the earth to shake. The place where they were meeting was shaken. Now, I am not saying that if we pray some magical prayer that all of a sudden this auditorium begins to shake and we would have a really cool worship service at that point. That's not what I'm saying. But I am saying this: when God's people get on their knees and on their faces on behalf of brothers and sisters around the world, He will shake the earth for His glory and He will make His glory known. He will move in ways that can't be described or attributed to man. He will move in incredible ways if we will pray and then rise and put feet to those prayers. Expect the earth to shake. God wants to make His glory known in Sudan and in Birmingham and everywhere in between. So, let's be a people that pray for it.

Number two, expect the Spirit to fill. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. They were filled with God's Spirit. Now, it wasn't that they didn't already have God's Spirit. Acts 2 tells us the Spirit had already come down on them. The Spirit was dwelling inside of them. We know that from the rest of the New Testament. But we also see that for the proclamation of the Word of God, He fills us, and gives us power—fresh power—to proclaim the gospel. Over and over and over again. That's exactly what He does here in Acts 4.

And that's why in the verses that follow, they go out and they do. They proclaim the gospel with great boldness. That's why we see what happened with Stephen, with him standing up and proclaiming the gospel with great boldness and then them being scattered to Samaria and Judea and the ends of the earth. The Spirit fills His people. The Spirit is filling His people around the world. I pray that we are longing for the Spirit to fill His people in Birmingham for the proclamation of the gospel here and in all nations.

Finally, expect the gospel to succeed. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the Word of God boldly. If you will notice what happens after this in Acts 4, it's great. Peter and John were put in jail for proclaiming the gospel. They preached to enough people that thousands of people were saved before they got put in jail. When they get out of jail, it didn't stop the church; it only fueled the church. It's exactly what we see throughout the book of Acts. The advancement of the kingdom, the proclamation of the gospel, does not happen in spite of persecution and suffering. It happens precisely by the means of persecution and suffering. That's how the gospel is proclaimed. Expect the gospel to succeed.

Entering the World of Mini-Women

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 07:30 AM PST

Nancy Rue, author of numerous Zonderkidz titles such a
Dear Nancy, Totally Unfair, and False Friends and True Strangers writes about the powerful connection that you can have to your tween girl, even while she begins to go through the many changes of becoming a teenager.

As a Zonderkidz author for some (insert muffled voice) years, I'm thrilled to be here as a guest blogger. And three guesses what I'm going to talk about – my fave subject: Mini-Women.

For the uninitiated, that is the 8 to 12 year old girl who is no longer that sweet little baby girlfriend who thought you were as infallible as Elmo, but who has not yet completely lost her mind and become a teenager. Psychologists used to refer to this age range as "the latent period", though it is anything but. Even the title "tween" was coined by the advertising world to denote a group who is merely "between."

But this wonderful, changing-daily (or hourly), unpredictable period is full of the potential for crazy fun Mini-Women to someday turn into the godly full-grown versions. This is where it begins. Not three years from now when the eyes start to roll and the most frequently used word is "whatever." The time is now.

The good news is that in the tween years, a girl is still more likely to look to her parents for guidance, security, and all-out authority than she is to anyone else, including the all-knowing BFF (or group thereof). She wants her mom and dad. She responds to them. She soaks them up like the proverbial sponge.

The even better news? She is, by nature of her developmental stage, open to all that the Christian faith has to offer: forgiveness, hope, empowerment, a sense of belonging and acceptance, and the knowledge that she is loved unconditionally.

So how do we capitalize on all that? By engaging our tween girls in conversations about their faith, in terms of the issues and struggles they're facing right now – things that may not seem like problems to you at all, but are monumental in their world.

I have a suggestion. If you are the parent of a tween girl or you're in a position of influence in the life of one, get her a FaithGirlz Bible. I promise I would say that even if I wasn't the author of the features. (Really!) Those of us who worked on this Bible had one goal in mind: to help mini-women see that Scripture is relevant to their lives today. Every sidebar ties the featured passage to a tween-sized personal issue, everything from getting along with siblings, to, well, getting along with God.

Right now, we have a giveaway going on. Simply click here to enter & for all the details.

Whether you use the FaithGirlz Bible or any other version, I hope you'll carve out some time to share the spiritual adventure with that mini-woman (this is one simple way to do so) in your life who still thinks you know more than she does!

Blessings,

Nancy Rue

Pray for the Hui

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 04:00 AM PST

In case you missed our announcement in November, we wanted to make sure you know that our prayer time at Secret Church on March 29 will be focused on the Hui people of China.

The Hui
The Hui (pronounced “way”), made up of at least 13 million people, are the largest and most widespread of China's Muslim nationalities. They also comprise the third largest minority group in China. To be Hui is to be Muslim—it is the core of who they are.

For the Hui, Islam is more than just a set of religious beliefs—it is a total way of life. Therefore, those who have become Christ-followers face pressure and persecution from their families and communities when they believe in Christ.

Although there are more than 13 million Hui scattered throughout China, very few (including the Chinese church) are intentionally planting their lives among the Hui to tell them about Christ.

More About the Hui
In March, we’ll be blogging daily about the Hui to let you know about their life and the challenges they face. If you want to learn more now (and who wouldn’t?!), you can go to the Pray for the Hui website that launched recently or follow them on Twitter (@pray4hui).

Get Involved
We would also like to ask you to commit to pray for the Hui throughout the month of April. We are inviting families, small groups, and churches to join us as in April as we pray for the gospel to go forth amongst the Hui. Ask your small group or church leaders if they would consider joining us as well.

What Do We Pray For? Part 3 of 4

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 04:00 AM PST

We’re in the middle of a four part series in which Pastor David Platt instructs our prayers for the persecuted from the book of Acts. If you missed part 1, “Why Do We Pray?”, or part 2, “Who Do We Pray To?”, we invite you to check them out. Then, keep your eyes peeled the final post in the series early next week.

In what was the worst persecution believers had experienced up to that point, Peter and John were thrown into prison for proclaiming Christ. Immediately upon their release, amidst increasing disapproval from outside authorities, the believers prayed the words now found in Acts 4:24-31. Teaching from this passage, Pastor David now answers the question, “What do we pray for?”

_________________________________________________________________

How do you pray for people in Sudan or China or North Korea or Saudi Arabia? What do you pray for?

I want you to see three things the believers in Acts 4 prayed for. But I think it would probably be most appropriate for us to start with what they didn't pray for. Sometimes what the Bible doesn't show us actually shows us a lot.

Notice that at no point in Acts 4 do you see them praying for the persecution to stop. At no point in Acts 4 do you see them praying for God to bring His wrath down on those people around them. At no point do you see them lamenting for what they were going through. Instead of praying for escape from that trial, they prayed for enablement to stand up under the trial. Did you catch that? That's a weird way for us as Americans to pray. It's a weird way for us who cling to comfort to pray. Not for escape, but for enablement in the middle of it. And that's what they prayed in Acts 4. And that's what saints around the world are praying, and that's what we need to pray on their behalf. So, instead of for escape, pray for enablement.

I think they prayed for three main things here in Acts 4. Number one, they prayed for the honor of Christ. "Now, Lord, consider their threats" (Acts 4:29)—what were the threats? Look back in chapter 4, verse 18 and 21, and you'll see the threats. They came to Peter and John and said, “You better stop preaching in the name of Jesus. Stop speaking about Jesus, stop proclaiming Jesus.”

"Now Lord, consider their threats."

Picture their prayer, "God, these people are rising up and trying to stop the proclamation of the glory of Jesus Christ. And we are praying that you would rise up and enable us to speak with great boldness so that the honor of Christ might be proclaimed through us." Notice that at the heart of their prayer was not even for their own needs. What was it for? Not for the needs of men. But the glory of Christ was at the center of their prayer. And it needs to be the center of our prayer for each other, in our own lives, and for these guys.

I’m not saying that praying for needs in our lives is not important, but that's what we pray for all the time and we miss out on the whole point. The whole point is that God will enable us in the trials, in the suffering, in the persecution that we or they experience. "Christ, honor your name in the middle of it. Make your glory named in the middle of it no matter what it costs, make your glory known." Pray for the honor of Christ.

Two, pray for the boldness of the church. "Consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness" (Acts 4:29). Imagine the temptation that was facing them in Acts 4, when you see your son or daughter's face and you know that if you go out and proclaim the name of Jesus, you may not come back to care for them. Imagine the difficulty of being in a place like Sudan or other places in the world where that is a reality day in and day out. You pray for boldness for the church.

Not only to pray for the honor of Christ and for boldness of the church, but I think the whole prayer here is a prayer for the advancement of the kingdom. They continue on, and they say "stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders" among the people (Acts 4:30). God, we don't want to just see the gospel proclaimed, we want to see it transforming lives. And that's the picture we are hearing here about places like Sudan. There is a great need for the gospel to be proclaimed.

Pray for the honor of Christ. Pray for the boldness of the church, and pray for the advancement of the kingdom.

Esther 2:22

Turkish police recently arrested 14 suspects in connection with a plot to assassinate Pastor Emre Karaali of the Izmit Protestant Church. The suspects, two of whom were members of the church, intended to murder the pastor during a series of evangelistic outreach meetings. Police discovered that the suspects had collected personal information about the pastor as well as photos of other preachers who visited the church. Police responded quickly when they learned that the suspects had brought in someone from Diyarbakir, in eastern Turkey, to carry out the murder. During his four-year tenure at the church, Pastor Emre has been repeatedly threatened. However, he said, "We haven't lost our confidence. On the contrary, we feel the Lord is with us because he didn't allow this to happen, and we will continue to do what the Lord asks." Two VOM workers were able to spend time encouraging Emre just two weeks after the arrests. Praise God that Turkish authorities acted to protect Pastor Emre.

Gunmen attacked two Somali pastors on Thursday, Feb. 7, in Garissa, Kenya, wounding one and killing Pastor Abdi Welli. The pastors were leaving a bank when they were shot. Pastor Abdi leaves behind his wife, Helen, and three young sons. "He was a great, faithful believer who continued onward for the sake of the gospel in a very dangerous place," said a VOM field worker. "Today, he gave his highest act of devotion to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." Garissa is a violence-plagued city in northeastern Kenya, where Islamist terrorists have been targeting Christians and churches. Last July, terrorists killed 16 people in church bombings. India--Hindu Villagers Attack Christian Women
Source: Release International

Exodus 15:1

On Jan. 14, three Christian women were attacked by a mob in Tamsai village, near Mumbai, while they were washing clothes at a public well. The Hindu villagers apparently were irritated by Christian music that a woman's 12-year-old daughter was listening to on a mobile phone. The villagers protested that Christian music should not be played within their hearing, and eventually a mob of 50 gathered near the homes of the Christian women and physically assaulted them. Hindu extremists of Tamsai have strongly opposed the use of Christian worship music during healing services in the past. But many Hindus in the area are still turning to Christ. Pray for the women who were attacked as well as other Christians throughout India who face similar threats daily.

Who Do We Pray To? Part 2 of 4

Based on Acts 4, who do we pray to? Now, I know some of you are thinking, "Well, that's a weird question to ask. Of course that's a no-brainer. God would be the answer. 'Who do we pray to?' Why do you ask that?"

Well, I think it's interesting. If you look in Acts 4, these believers spend five verses telling God who He is before they ask Him for anything. Now, why would they do that? As if God needed to know who He was. As if they needed to fill God in on some new information. That wasn't their point though. What Scripture is telling us here is that if we are going to pray, we need to know the God we are praying to. We need to know who He is, and that will lead us to pray the correct way.

So, I want you to see who they were praying to. They spent five verses summing up, I believe, three characteristics of God. First of all, God is the One who is control. Amidst the disarray of Acts 4, they gather together as one family and they pray. What are the first words that come out of their mouths? "Sovereign Lord." The one who is in control. That is what it means for God to be sovereign. The word in the original language of the New Testament there is "despota,” which basically means "despot," like a ruler. An absolute ruler over people. And that's what they say to God. "God, we know that you are in control." And every verse that follows from that talks about how everything that happens in history happens at the hand of God and how He is in control. Not Satan. Satan is on a leash and God is in control of this thing.

It is huge for people in the midst of persecution and suffering to know that amidst the questions and amidst the confusion, amidst the anxiety, amidst losing your mom or your dad or your brother or sister or your son or your daughter … amidst all of that, you can look up and see that God is still on the throne. He is still in control of everything that is going on. This is their favorite phrase in Sudan. If I heard it once, I heard it a million times. You could go up to people and talk with them, saying, "Man, I am so sorry about what has happened" after just seeing bombed villages or churches or this or that. And they would look at you and say, "Oh, God is greater. God is greater because He is always in control."

Not only the One who is in control, but number two, we pray to the One who is always faithful to His Word. In Acts 4, they quote from Psalm 2. Look at the similarities there between what they were facing and what Psalm 2 is talking about. It's talking about how one day the kings of the earth, the nations, rise up against Christ, the anointed one of God. And the believers in Acts 4 say, "God, You knew that was going to happen to Your Son. The same is true, You knew it was going to happen to us. But You also said to your Son back in Psalm 2 that the ends of the earth would be His possession. He would come out victorious in this thing." And so they pray based on Psalm 2, “and we believe the same thing. We believe that you are going to show yourself faithful to your word amidst our persecution and so they prayed based on the Word of God.”

They’re praying to the One who is in control, the One who is always faithful to His Word, and number three, they pray to the One who is familiar with suffering. See how all throughout this passage they are identifying themselves with Christ. They say, "This is supposed to happen to Christ. The persecution, the suffering, the kings of the earth, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel would rise up against Him, and it all happened according to your will." And what they are saying, basically, is "If we are going to be identified with Christ, we know that the same thing is going to happen to us."

It's what we see throughout Scripture. If we are going to show the glory of Christ, then we have to show the suffering of Christ in the world.

In Acts 4, they are not praying to a God who is out there in the distance, who doesn't really have a grip on what's actually going on in the world. This is a God who is in the middle of it and who gave His life—amidst the suffering and the persecution that we see Christ endure—so that He would be familiar with it. And when we come to Him, He is the one who is familiar with suffering. Now, that's a pretty incredible God to pray to—the God who is in control, the God who is familiar with suffering and the God who is always faithful to His Word.

Eritrea--Christian Leaders Arrested in Asmarag

Numbers 6:25-26

At least 20 church leaders were arrested at their homes in Eritrea's capital on Thursday, Jan. 17, in an apparently coordinated move by authorities, and some have reportedly been imprisoned. The church leaders were from a variety of denominations, including the Full Gospel Church and the Mesret Kristos (Mennonite) Church. The situation in Eritrea has deteriorated dramatically in the last few months, according to VOM workers. Major commodities like electricity, water and grain are in short supply, and the government is rumored to be unstable. "To understand the extent is very difficult since Eritrea is a leading country on suppression of information," wrote a VOM worker. In January, a group of dissident soldiers demanding political change tried to seize control of the Ministry of Information, and three army officers were arrested. Eritrea's relations with Ethiopia have also worsened since the death of Ethiopian leader Meles Zenawi last August. Pray for God's peace in Eritrea.

Israel--Jewish Extremist Convicted in Bomb Attack on Pastor's Home

Galatians 6:2-3

Jewish extremist Jack Teitel was convicted in January by the Jerusalem District Court on two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The conviction comes nearly five years after Teitel's 2008 bomb attack on the home of Christian pastor David Ortiz. Teitel left a pipe bomb disguised as a package on the Ortiz's doorstep, and when 15-year-old Ami Ortiz opened the package, the bomb exploded, seriously injuring Ami. During the trial, Teitel said, "God is proud of what I did. I have no regrets." His criminal convictions include other crimes in addition to the Ortiz bombing. In a note to VOM, Pastor Ortiz's wife, Leah, wrote, "We want to thank everyone for standing with us because without your prayers and love we wouldn't have been able to go through this whole process."

Eastern Africa--Safe House Raided

John 14:27

Authorities in a closed country in Eastern Africa raided a VOM-supported safe house and church at the end of January. "They came in a group with the police on Jan. 26," wrote the pastor who runs the safe house. "They accused us that we are burning and putting down the book of Quran, and they slapped my face. When they try to find their book they found only the Bible." The interrogators also asked the pastor's wife and another Christian woman present what they believed. The women told them they were Christians. The authorities finally left after several people from the community came to tell them that the Christians were good people, but the authorities closed down the meeting place. Please pray for the pastor and his family, who will likely have to find a new home and safe house. The pastor requests prayer for protection and boldness.

Turkey--VOM Project

Pray for a radio ministry that encourages secret and persecuted believers by providing encouraging stories of persecution. The radio episodes are relevant not only to believers but also to Muslims who listen to the broadcasts. Since the Malatya murders several years ago, many believers have begun to consider the cost of following Christ. This program provides them with examples of courageous faith.
