A Secret Church Story from Nicaragua

Posted: 29 Apr 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Secret Church was just a few weeks ago, and we’ve been so privileged to read stories of how God used and continues to use Secret Church in your life and church. Over the next few weeks, we’ll share some of these stories so we can rejoice together!

I am a missionary serving with the Hope Project International in Matagalpa, Nicaragua and was so blessed to be able to offer the Secret Church to a group of young men I am discipling. When I found out it was being offered in Spanish I shared it with the guys and they asked me if they could invite some others. I said of course and we ended up with twelve who attended God is doing great things here and it is exciting to see young people who are wanting follow Christ. Thanks so much for providing this in Spanish and allowing international countries to participate.

We would love to hear your Secret Church stories about something you learned, how the Lord is using this Secret Church in your life this week, or even how you’re sharing it with others! Will you take a few minutes and share your Secret Church story with us?

Behind the Scenes of an Amish Cooking Video Shoot

Posted: 27 Apr 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Hi friends. I'm Sherry Gore, and here's a little peek "behind-the-scenes" about the making of a few cooking videos my publisher is posting online in anticipation of the May 7 release of my book Simply Delicious Amish Cooking.  Hope you enjoy!

About a month ago, I get a call while filming a segment about Pinecraft for NBC's Today Show that my publicist at Zondervan wants me to travel up to their offices in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to film some cooking videos. I'm of course thrilled, and so I hop on a plane the following Tuesday afternoon. Now I've filmed cooking videos before, so I'm thinking that this will be just like those other times, nothing new: a big studio (or restaurant), three or four hundred people in an audience with plenty of interaction, and plenty of back-and-forth with a news correspondent or on-air talent of some kind ("talent" is the TV or film term for "actor" or "on-camera personality").

The biggest lesson I've learned of course: Rule #1–NEVER look at the camera.

Well the night before the shoot, my publicist drops a big bomb on me (I'm certain she had no idea) when she tells me "Oh, there won't be any audience or correspondent–you're going to be on camera by yourself."

Un ferstundich! [Oh my Goodness!]

Me. By myself. Talking directly into the camera. By myself. By myself.

I'm horrified. I don't know what on Earth I'm going to say when it's just me, alone, with the camera in the kitchen. What do you say? "Here's a spoon"? "This is a bowl"?! I have to be honest; I slept very poorly that night.

The next morning I show up on a very professional set. We're filming in a beautiful kitchen on a serene horse farm heading away from Grand Rapids, and by the time I arrive, two expensive looking cameras are already mounted: one faces where I'm to stand and one points to the ingredients for the whoopie pies I'm to make. There are poles and lights and sound equipment and wires and everything else scattered about, all just waiting for me to step in front.

It's quite exciting.

Two or three young men buzz around calibrating all the technical minutia that goes into capturing quality video, and heaven sakes do they make me feel at ease. They are so nice and so patient. Later on in the day, I would wonder aloud if they had noticed my nerves when I arrived.

"Nope," one of them said, "we knew you could do this from the start."

But I don't feel that way as the lights flash on and the seconds count down. I have to be honest with them.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to say," I finally admit.

"It's ok," they say, "just start cooking and tells us some stories about where you live."

Luckily, Pinecraft is one thing I do know how to talk about. And whoopie pies are a dessert I've probably made hundreds of times; even sold them at farmer's markets at one point. And so as soon as I get that spoon in my hand I am off. I forget about that camera. I forget that I'm by myself. I'm just Sherry Gore talking about her home while making a tasty treat. How can that go wrong?

Pretty soon, voila! There are the whoopie pies.

As I finish up, one of the camera guys says to me, "You're destined to have a cooking show, because you're just like the nice auntie that everybody wants to live next door to."

"Why thanks," I say.

"My Mom's going to love you," he says.

Well I sure hope that she does–after buying my book of course :)

Jimbo’s Secret Church Story

Secret Church was just a few weeks ago, and we’ve been so privileged to read stories of how God used and continues to use Secret Church in your life and church. Over the next few weeks, we’ll share some of these stories so we can rejoice together!

Jimbo shared this story with us:

Last night [at Secret Church] I had a humbling experience when the people in China were talking about their family disowning them and how people were risking their lives to spread the word of Jesus. We here in the USA have freedom to worship who we want and yet we are scared to even share the Good news with our family and friends. Well this morning I got the courage from last night to share the word with someone that I had been wanting to share with. It was tough at first but when I got started it was on!!! Thanks for doing this. It was my second year and we really loved it.

Burma--Christian Converts Lose Jobs and Homes
Source: VOM Sources

Colossians 1:11

Persecution is increasing in Burma as more people turn to Jesus Christ. Buddhists who convert to Christianity have difficulty keeping jobs and are often driven from their homes, according to a VOM worker. Two families currently working with VOM's Burma fish-farm project lost their jobs and homes after coming to faith in Christ last July. One family is living in a hut used for secret worship services, while the other is living in a hut where fish feed is stored. Amid this increasing pressure, the fish farm just completed its second harvest cycle. Despite setbacks from flooding and government opposition, the farm still generated income, which will be invested in church planting as well as re-invested to make the farm more productive. Pray that God will grant grace and strength to believers in Burma.

Kazakhstan--Believers Fined for Prayer Service
Sources: VOM Sources, Forum 18 News

Hebrews 10:25

Seven members of a small Baptist church in Ayagoz, East Kazakhstan Province, were fined recently for holding unregistered religious services. Police raided the group's prayer service on April 4, and all seven were fined the equivalent of nearly two months' average wages. According to Forum 18 News, two of those fined were grandmothers in their late 70s. Although appeals for dismissal of the fines were unsuccessful, media attention has helped the case of another Baptist, Vyacheslav Cherkasov. The court has overturned a previous decision to destroy Bibles that were confiscated from Cherkasov. Under Kazakhstan's legal code, both "Leadership of an unregistered or banned social or religious organization" and "missionary activity without registration" are illegal.

Nepal--Pastor Imprisoned Over Hindu Dietary Customs
Source: VOM Sources

1 Peter 3:13-14

Pastor Chhedar Nhote Lhomi was arrested and imprisoned after local people accused him of killing a cow. Before his arrest, the local people destroyed his family's home and possessions. Pastor Lhomi, a husband and father of three young children, has also been accused of spreading the gospel and making Hindus eat beef. He is now facing a prison sentence of 12 years. VOM will be working to achieve Pastor Lhomi's release from prison and helping to support his family during this time. He will not be allowed to receive Christian visitors while in prison, but VOM will add him to the www.prisoneralert.com website so that he can receive letters from believers around the world who are praying for him. Pastor Lhomi has been working in ministry since 2003 and leads an established church that meets regularly.

Egypt--Seven Killed in Muslim-Christian Violence
Sources: Associated Press, VOM Sources

Psalm 34:18

At least seven people were killed in Cairo on April 7-8 as clashes resumed between Muslims and Christians in the worst sectarian violence in months. Four Christians and a Muslim were killed on Sunday, April 7, and fighting erupted again the next day, following funerals for those killed. Muslims fired birdshot and threw rocks and firebombs at Coptic Christians who were holding an anti-government protest near Cairo's main Coptic cathedral. When Christians barricaded themselves inside the cathedral, the church itself came under attack. Police fired tear gas at the mob and also at Christians inside the church grounds. At least 101 people were injured during the two days of violence. A Christian named Helal Saber was walking in the area when Muslims stopped him and asked if he was a Muslim or a Christian. When he said he was a Christian, they poured fuel on him and set him on fire. Helal died of his injuries on April 12.

Mali--Christian Work Continues amid Civil War
Source: VOM Sources

2 Corinthians 8:1-5

Though Mali is ravaged by civil war, life and work continue in the southern part of the country, a VOM worker reports. Several safe houses in the region continue to shelter groups of former Muslims who were threatened by their Muslim families. The Christian converts cultivate nearby farmland and continue to grow in faith through daily prayers, group classes and individual Bible study. When Christians fled from Islamist militants in the north, most left their possessions, including their Bibles, behind. VOM workers have been able to provide several of them with Bibles and are meeting with a group of homeless women for Bible study.

West Bank--Former Muslim Evangelist Turns to Christ
Source: VOM Sources

1 Timothy 4:12

A young Muslim man in the West Bank who tried to convert a foreign friend to Islam, ended up giving his life to Christ. Frustrated by his inability to answer his foreign friend's questions about Islam, 24-year-old Mahmoud asked God to show him the truth. Mahmoud said the Lord revealed himself in a vision, and he then accepted Jesus as his Savior. When Mahmoud told his best friend what he was studying in the Bible, he, too, came to know Christ. They shared their new faith with a third friend, who also became a Christian, and the three of them began to study the Bible together. The young men were baptized by a VOM partner organization, which continues to help them grow in their faith. Pray that these three men will grow to become leaders who can reach their area for Christ.

Philippines--VOM Project

Pray for 26 pastors and Christian leaders in Muslim-controlled areas of Mindanao who received motorbikes through VOM. Each of them continues to serve despite persecution. The motorcycles will help them reach believers in different villages in Mindanao.

Aindrea’s Secret Church Story

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Secret Church was just two weeks ago, and we’ve been so privileged to read stories of how God used and continues to use Secret Church in your life and church. Over the next few weeks, we’ll share some of these stories so we can rejoice together!

Aindrea shared this with us:

On Friday, March 29th, 2013 at 7 pm, I participated in my first ever Bible Study. I never thought I would ever be involved in anything like Secret Church. All my life, I have struggled trying to figure out myself and what I believe in. In the end of last year.. around December 2012.. I felt my heart being crushed and it felt so good! Ever since that started happening, I have not been the same since and I honestly would not change one thing!!

Secret Church was such an amazing experience for me and I learned so much more about our Lord. It was very worth my time and even though it lasted 7 hours and I had pretty much no sleep, I am so happy I was included in something so big! It was so great knowing there were others involved all across the world.. it truly puts a big smile on my face and a never ending love for Him in my heart for Him leading me where I am today. I wish there was a way I can seriously explain how I feel about our God, our Savior but I do know there is ONE way that I will never give up on doing.. spreading His word, the gospel. I know it will change other’s lives, just like it changed mine.

Thank you so much Secret Church for making me realize more and more how much He loves us (more than we can even imagine) and that He is worth everything and more. He will forevermore be within me and I am so grateful and blessed!! God Bless :)

We would love to hear your Secret Church stories about something you learned, how the Lord is using this Secret Church in your life this week, or even how you’re sharing it with others! Will you take a few minutes and share your Secret Church story with us?

Syria--Blessings amid Ever-Worsening Situation
Source: VOM Contacts

Romans 5:10

VOM partners in Syria were forced to abbreviate and cancel Easter celebrations due to fighting in the region. "We canceled the Good Friday service because of the fight," wrote one partner, "and we did the whole service of Easter ... in 40 minutes." A mortar exploded on Good Friday in front of the building where this contact lives, killing one woman. Another exploded the following Monday, killing two others. Our partner had two hours of electricity on Wednesday after five days without. The fighting also cost this group around $10,000 in literature and rent when their apartment housing a small bookstore was destroyed by a bomb. "Any blessed news? Yes!" the partner wrote. "We are still here, thankful for the protection of our Lord. We had the blessed chance to distribute food packages to 60 families." This contact also still has three active Bible classes in the region.

Nigeria--Militants Kill 10 Family Members
Source: VOM Contacts

Psalm 69:1-3

Islamists killed 10 members of one family on Feb. 21 in an evening attack near Jos. Five of those killed were children, ranging in age from 9 months to 5 years old. At about 8 p.m., around 40 armed militants entered the home of the Musa family near the entrance of Kogom Village. They broke down the doors of a home shared by four adult siblings and their families, then brutally killed everyone they encountered with machetes and automatic rifles. Two family members in their 20s, Habila Musa, and Regina, the wife of Jacob Musa, were the only survivors of the attack. Regina is deeply traumatized; the militants killed not only her husband but also her three children, ages 9 months old, 3 years old and 5 years old.

Azerbaijan--More Fines for Two Baptist Ministers
Source: Forum 18 News Service

Psalm 31:1-2

The leaders of two small Baptist churches in Azerbaijan have been fined for holding worship services and threatened with tougher penalties if they don't stop. At a hearing on Good Friday, judges fined pastors Zaur Balayev and Hamid Shabanov 1,500 AZN ($1,900) each, according to contacts. The fines amount to more than a year's salary for a laborer. Zaur Balayev spent nearly a year in prison for his Christian work in 2007-2008, and he is currently caring for his wife, who is ill with cancer. The fine for Hamid Shabanov was issued to his wife, Hinayat, in his place, since Hamid was out of the country. Hamid has also spent time in prison.
