Pray for Iran

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 07:49 AM PDT

Iran continues live up to its anti-Christian reputation, recently arresting 8 Christians and sentencing them to prison. The believers plan on appealing, but as it stands, their convictions of “action against national security” and “propaganda against the system” came with sentences ranging from 1 to 6 years, and bail amounts ranging from $80,000 to $200,000.

These arrests occur against the backdrop of Pastor Saeed Abedini’s 300th day in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison. His imprisonment came as a result of his Christian faith and prior involvement in an underground house church network in Iran. Abedini, a dual citizen of Iran and the US, was in Iran helping orphans at the time of his arrest. His wife and 2 children remain at their home in the US, making appeals to the government and fighting for increased attention on Saeed’s plight.

Below is a brief and helpful video summary of Abedini’s current situation. The encouragement is simple: follow through. Keep praying, keep telling people, keep writing letters… keep the pressure on. Iran seems to be making positive steps, but only because of the negative international attention. It looks as though this pressure must continue if Abedini is to be released.

Video from SaveSaeed.org (HT: ACLJ)

Pray for Pastor Saeed. Pray for the 8 Christians who were recently arrested. And pray for the countless number of suffering Iranian believers whose stories haven’t been told.

Pray for the Hui… Still

Posted: 25 Jul 2013 09:04 AM PDT

It’s not April anymore, Secret Church 13 is nearly four months past, and the Hui people (SC 13 prayer focus) have likely taken a back seat in our minds. If you were praying for them regularly, you may not be anymore. And we get that. Prayer focuses can be seasonal, and you certainly can’t effectively pray for all the people groups of the world at once.

However, we want to ask you to keep the Hui in your prayers for the next couple of weeks as Ramadan continues. Remember: to be Hui is to be Muslim. So this is a particularly important month for them religiously, as they will be less concerned with everyday things and more concerned with spiritual matters.

Ask the Lord to continue working in their hearts, preparing them to hear and respond to the gospel – the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom 1:16). Then pray that laborers will be sent to speak this good news so that they can hear and have faith in the Word of God (Rom 10:14-17, Luke 10:2). Remember to pray also for the believers among them to be bold and unashamed in their proclamation of Christ as they wisely and courageously endure sure persecution.

Maybe someday the Hui people will be known for their thriving Christian church instead of their devotion to a god who does not save.

For more ways to specifically pray for the Hui, go to Pray4Hui.com.

Iran--Eight Christians Sentenced to Prison

Matthew 5:11-12

On July 16, eight Iranian Christians were sentenced to prison after being convicted of "action against national security" and "propaganda against the system." The sentences, which range from one to six years in length, follow the court's issuance of bail amounts ranging from $80,000 to $200,000. The Christians are expected to appeal their convictions. The National Council of the Church of Iran said the charges against the eight Christians were entirely without foundation and that they would continue to "pray for our leaders and for peace and reconciliation in our nation." In Iran, non-Muslim religious activities are commonly characterized as threats to national security.
Egypt--Radical Muslims Continue Attacks on Christians

Psalm 9:13-16

Magdy Lamie, a 59-year-old Egyptian Christian, was beheaded this month by radical Muslims, further emphasizing the danger of being a Christian in Egypt, a VOM contact reported. In the city of Luxor, Christian leaders received reports that four other believers were martyred. In Upper Egypt near Menia City, church meetings have been canceled and Christians avoid moving about in public for fear of being attacked. Radicals have painted marks on local Christian-owned shops to make for easy attack and to warn outsiders not to purchase from the Christians. Many Christian shop owners have closed their shops. Christian women and girls are staying at home to prevent being attacked or kidnapped by radical Muslims.
Guinea--Anti-Christian Persecution Increasing in Guinea
Source: VOM Sources

Hebrews 10:32-39

Violence against Christians in Guinea, especially along the Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire borders, has been steadily increasing. Three churches in Guinea were burned in the last week, according to VOM contacts, and Christians have been told that they will be taken into the forest and forced to endure animalistic ritual ceremonies. Christians are often refused jobs, robbed and ridiculed, and new Christian converts are immediately ostracized by family and friends. A number of Christians have had children or wives taken from them, while others have suffered physical violence because of their faith in Christ.
Eritrea: Half “Christian,” Wholly Hostile To Christ

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 10:01 PM PDT

We’ve made mention of the World Watch List numerous times, most recently in reference to Christians who live in heavily Islamic contexts. As you read through the list of countries in which Christians are most persecuted, you’ll probably do a double when you round off the Top Ten with Eritrea. After seeing North Korea at number 1 with it’s atheistic hatred for Christianity, and Somalia in chaos at number 3 with its unstable Islamist influence, seeing Eritrea at number 10 with a population that is about 50% Christian definitely seems a little strange.

Here’s the catch: the state only recognizes a select few religious institutions – the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, the Lutheran Church, and Islam. Individuals that stray from what the government deems acceptable subject themselves to harsh mistreatment, imprisonment, and oftentimes even death. This means that evangelicals seeking to live out their faith in holy obedience to Christ are frequently persecuted.

Yosief Kebedom Gelai is one such disciple. He recently became a believer, and about eight months ago, he was arrested and taken to a secret detention center because officials had taken notice of “his devotion to Bible study and prayer.” On July 5, due to a disease he had and the terrible conditions in which he was confined, Gelai passed away. "Christians should be greatly encouraged to see how God, through His Holy Spirit, enables His children, even new and isolated ones like Yosief, to remain firm in their devotion to Christ no matter the circumstances," said an Open Doors team member.

Eritrea’s latest arrests have targeted single, Christian women – at least 14 in the last month. They, among others, have had to face “incarceration in stifling metal shipping containers, overcrowded cells and dungeons.” This is after the government’s recent call at a women’s conference to stop the influence of evangelicals by “all possible means.”

According to church leaders in Eritrea, around 1,500 Christians are currently imprisoned. They suffer in brutal conditions and are sometimes even tortured. Their whereabouts are often unknown and communication with them is usually closed. What is more, stuck in a seemingly inescapable quandary, these believers haven’t even been formally charged with a crime.

With 3 of the 4 government-recognized organizations being of a Christian tradition, it would be easy to overlook Eritrea, neglecting to pray for Eritrean Christians who are being persecuted. But we must not forget them. Our brothers and sisters in Christ are in desperate need of our prayers. And as we remember them, let us be encouraged by them. Said one anonymous, evangelical pastor in Eritrea,"The persecution in Eritrea is a sweet and bitter providence of God. The number of people [from all walks of life] who are receiving Christ attests to the fact that our suffering is God's strategy to have the Good News of Jesus Christ proclaimed to the Eritrean population through the suffering of the nation's Christians. I see Philippians 1:12-14 as being fulfilled in Eritrea through our suffering. This indeed is our great comfort and source of strength to keep going until the Lord brings all our sufferings to an end."

During Ramadan, Pray for Christians Too

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 10:01 PM PDT

As we intentionally pray for Muslims during Ramadan, let’s also remember to pray for our fellow believers who live and work alongside them. It should go without saying that we need to pray for the global Church, but perhaps the following statistics will give us appropriate zeal for lifting up these precious brothers and sisters in Christ.

  • According to World Watch List, of the 50 countries where Christians are most persecuted, 37 have a Muslim majority.
  • Of the top 10…
    • 9 are majority Muslim countries
    • 7 are over 90% Muslim
    • 4 are over 99% Muslim.

The 9 majority Muslim countries in the Top 10 account for approximately 13% of the world’s Muslim population, the highest volume of Muslims residing in the denser countries of Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh (3 of which appear on the World Watch List's Top 50).

Here are the Top 10 countries where persecution of Christians is worst, along with the estimated percentage of Muslims and estimated number of evangelical Christians in each country.

  1. North Korea
    - Under 0.1% Muslim
    - 246,400 evangelical Christians
  2. Saudi Arabia
    - 92.41% Muslim
    - 88,620 evangelical Christians
  3. Afghanistan
    - 99.85% Muslim
    - 8,442 evangelical Christians
  4. Iraq
    - 95.91% Muslim
    - 53,371 evangelical Christians
  5. Somalia
    - 99.67% Muslim
    - 4,263 evangelical Christians
  6. Maldives
    - 99.04% Muslim
    - 235 evangelical Christians
  7. Mali
    - 87.38% Muslim
    - 93,630 evangelical Christians
  8. Iran
    - 98.65% Muslim
    - 116,678 evangelical Christians
  9. Yemen
    - 99.92% Muslim
    - 4,275 evangelical Christians
  10. Eritrea
    - 50.26% Muslim
    - 111,400 evangelical Christians

In total, nearly 481,000 evangelical Christians live in these countries of “extreme persecution,” without even counting those in North Korea.

We put all this before you as an encouragement to pray for Christians who live in these Muslim areas (either as native residents or foreign missionaries) with increased urgency. What we are not saying is that Muslims are our enemies. On the contrary, we know that the vast majority of Muslims are peaceable and friendly toward people of all religions. Muslims are, first and foremost, our neighbors, and out of love, we want to proclaim to them all the fullness of Jesus Christ. Yet it remains that most of the countries in which Christians experience the greatest amount of opposition in the world are Islamic, so during Ramadan, when religious fervor is high and proselytization by Muslims is heightened, we must pray for Christians in these areas. We must pray that they endure persecution with their eyes set on Christ and their hearts full of compassion for their Muslim neighbors.

Vietnam--New Believers Pressured to Renounce Faith

Psalm 16:1

A young couple who accepted Christ last month have been beaten and threatened by officials, according to a VOM worker. Local authorities hit the wife on the face with a stick and threatened to take the couple's land and home if they refuse to renounce Christianity and return to Buddhism. The wife fears further beatings, and the husband is afraid they will lose their land and have no way of supporting their family. The couple, who survive through subsistence farming, have three boys aged 10, 12 and 14. Their pastor is trying to help, but he lives 15 miles away in another village. Pray for the protection and provision of this family and that they will stand firm in the faith.
Muslim World--The Ramadan Fast
Source: VOM Sources

Philippians 2:10-11

July 9 marked the start of the Muslim fast of Ramadan. The fast, which continues until August 7, requires Muslims around the world to abstain from all food and drink during daylight hours and examine their lives before Allah. Pray that as Muslims seek Allah they will instead find the truth of Christ. Pray also that VOM's many field workers in predominantly Muslim nations will be able to reach out to Muslims with the gospel during this time.
Syria--Rebels Increase Attacks Against Christians
Source: VOM Sources

Psalm 72:4

A VOM contact, "Touma," reports that his family is in danger from rebel attacks in their Christian village south of Damascus. Touma's family has hosted the rebels' families in the past when they needed shelter and has provided food and shared the gospel with them. They have even supplied some of the rebels with Bibles, which they gratefully received. However, in the last month the rebels have begun to attack their village, steal their crops and kidnap family members for ransom. The rebels recently kidnapped one of Touma's cousins and his cousin's son from their home, and the family is still waiting to hear the kidnappers' demands. Touma says many Christian children in the village are terrified of the rebels, who have tried to break into their homes. Many families have left the village, fearing for their safety. Pray for the safety of these Christians, especially those who have been kidnapped, and pray that they will have the grace and strength to continue loving their enemies.
Somalia--VOM Project

Pray for the Christian converts who will be temporarily housed in VOM-sponsored safe houses. These believers have escaped persecution and are being provided a temporary place to stay and prepare for the next phase of their lives.
After multiple surgeries and a year in the hospital, she is now able to walk with crutches. A VOM contact recently accompanied Susan as she returned to school for a new term. Though she's 15, Susan will be studying at the fourth-grade level; she is far behind because of the torture and subsequent medical treatment. An older Christian woman and a pastor are taking care of Susan. Despite the challenges she faces, Susan moved her things into the school with a broad smile. Egypt--Christians Hopeful After Change in Country's Leadership
Source: VOM Sources

Proverbs 15:16

Egyptian Christians are elated that President Mohammed Morsi, who was backed by the Muslim Brotherhood, was forced out on July 3, 2013, according to our contacts in Egypt. Millions of Egyptians, both Christian and Muslim, took to the streets from June 30 to July 3, urging President Morsi to step down. "At 8:30 p.m., while we were waiting in the streets shouting against Dr. Morsi, the army leaders made the decision that Dr. Morsi was not the president anymore," our contact wrote. "We were crying and laughing, greeting each other in the street, kissing and hugging each other." Before the protests, several Christians received letters warning them not to join the protests. Christians hope the new leadership will stop the outpouring of violence that has been directed toward them by radical Muslims in the past year. Please continue to pray for Egypt.
Pastor Robert Asseriyan, a leader of the Central Assemblies of God (AOG) church in Tehran, was released from prison on July 2 after spending 43 days in jail. It appears that Pastor Asseriyan has been released on bail, but authorities have warned him and his family not to discuss his release or his upcoming trial. Their silence is a condition of his release. Pastor Asseriyan was arrested on May 21 during a prayer meeting at the church. Before arresting Pastor Asseriyan, authorities raided his home, where they confiscated a computer and several books. They closed the church the day after his arrest. Continue to pray for Pastor Asseriyan and the AOG church as they struggle to remain one of the few churches in Iran providing Farsi-language services.
