Pastor Youcef Released, Others Arrested

Posted: 14 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

Iranian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani was released for a second time on Monday after being re-arrested on Christmas day.  This is the latest development in the three-year-long roller coaster of Pastor Youcef’s arrest and imprisonment in which, at one point, he was sentenced to death.  According to an Open Doors prayer update, his latest January 7 release came “with orders to report back in 30 days to complete some documentation.”

Pastor Youcef’s release is great news.  However, it may be some of the only good news to be found concerning Christians in Iran these days.  The same Open Doors prayer update reports that just two days after Christmas, a gathering of about 50 Christians was interrupted by around 15 Iranian “police and security agents.”  They gave the believers questionnaires that required personal information about their social media accounts as well as details about their conversion.  They also took up their cell phones and told the believers that they would each be called to the local security office following investigation.  One of the believers present, Pastor Vruir Avanessian, was taken into custody.  His house was then raided by officials in the presence of his wife and children, and his computer equipment, CDs, and literature were all taken.

Additionally, a week and a half ago, “two men in the same church network as Pastor Youcef were arrested in raids on their home in Rasht.”  Their names are Behzad and Mohammed-Reza.

As Iran tightens its already firm grip Christians’ religious freedoms, the future for believers there is uncertain and, no doubt, somewhat scary.  Let’s pray for our brothers and sister who live in Iran, the 8th worst persecutor of Christians in the world.

  • Thank God for Pastor Youcef’s release.
  • Pray for Pastor Vruir Avanessain.
  • Pray for the Christians under investigation right now.
  • Pray for Behzad.
  • Pray for Mohammed-Reza.
  • Pray for Mohammed Ali Dadkhah (Pastor Youcef’s attorney, not a believer)
  • Pray for all the other pastors and believers imprisoned in Iran right now.

In all cases, let’s remember to pray that these Christians do not shrink back, but thrive and endure to the end with the Lord as their refuge and strength.
