We recently highlighted Eritrea, a country that arrests evangelical Christians and detains them in inhumane conditions, such as metal shipping containers. As evidenced by the 30 additional Christians taken to a police station in Asmara on August 24, the arrests have not waned. The authorities holding these 30, including 12 women, are pressing them to deny Christ. Since January, at least 261 Christians have been arrested in Eritrea. Iraq is reeling from “the bloodiest Ramadan since 2007.” Christians in Baghdad don’t even venture outside their homes when they can avoid it; the streets are too dangerous for them. With bombings and threats of more, violence toward Christian seems to be doing everything but declining. Said an Open Doors fieldworker, “The hope of the Christians in Iraq is fading away… the situation is bad and getting worse.” Then in Pakistan, after a young Muslim woman eloped with a young Christian man, the village of Chak is on the brink of social chaos. Tensions rose as false accusations and rash actions were taken, and now, outnumbered 12 to 1, Christians in the tiny village are unable to work in the fields due to a hiring boycott, and food is quickly dwindling. Situations like these seem bleak, and it’s hard not to be discouraged by them. However, we can take them as evidence that the Lord is at work in and through those who confess his name, even – or maybe we should say especially - in hostile contexts. Let’s look to their example of devotion to Christ, be challenged by their faith, and pray that the Lord would preserve and protect them all the more… leading them in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. |
