Secret Church |
| “Underground Church” in South Africa Posted: 04 Sep 2013 10:01 PM PDT They call it Underground Church, not Secret Church. That’s the only difference for St. Barnabas Bible Church in Cape Town, South Africa. That, and the size of the room. And the fact that there is no simulcast. And that they use their own, original study material. And perhaps the format of the night. But besides all that, St. Barnabas’ Underground Church is exactly the same as Secret Church. How? They pray for the persecuted church and their pastor leads them in a time of Bible study. Any worship gathering that platforms these components is of one mind with Secret Church. That’s our heartbeat. And it’s St. Barnabas’ heartbeat. Take if from Alice, volunteer at the church who told us about their gathering in an email to our team last month: We thought you would be encouraged to hear that we are holding our second Underground Church… and we are expecting about 40 people, which is about as many as our hall can take. We'll be continuing in the book of Exodus and praying for Christians in Eritrea, Sudan, Columbia and Syria. We're excited to be doing Underground Church again as it was such a challenge and a blessing last year. We try and pray for persecuted Christians throughout the year, but Underground Church is definitely a special event, and it really affects our attitude to the Word and the way we view our Sunday meetings… We hope it encourages you to hear of other Secret Church meetings in other parts of the world. When God’s Word is studied and God’s children are lifted up in prayer, a Secret Church gathering takes place. Or an Underground Church. Or an Undercover Church. You can get creative… If you've participated in Secret Church in the past, then you know that an inherent part of the teaching is re-teaching… you're supposed to pass on what you learn. We do this naturally when it comes to sports scores, traffic reports, and weather forecasts. But how much more should we relate truth with eternal implications to those around us? Hosting your own Secret Church is a great forum for you to re-teach all that you’ve leaned. You can (and probably should) do this in a variety of other settings, but here’s at least one setting that you can create any time you like! While we’d ask that you use our materials should you do decide to call it "Secret Church," we enthusiastically encourage you do your own thing, like St. Barnabas. Simply study the Bible and pray. Structure the time like you need to, study the passages you desire, pray for whoever your are led to, and call it whatever you want to… but, by all means, do it. We’d love to pray for you and help however we can, so be sure to let us know about the gatherings you are planning through this short questionnaire. |
