Christians in Afghanistan Share Twelve Ways to Pray

In light of the plight of Iraqi Christians after American troops left, the impending withdrawal of the international military presence in Afghanistan in 2014 raises new concerns for the small community of believers in Afghanistan as the country transition into a “new Afghanistan.” With more than 30 million Afghan Muslims and only several thousand Christians, these faithful followers of Christ and the country of Afghanistan are in great need of prayer. Join Afghan Christians as they pray daily for God’s church in Afghanistan, small in number, but mighty in the power of the Lord.

  1. There are no church buildings in Afghanistan and many Christians are cut off from underground networks of believers. They feel isolated and unsure whom to trust. Pray that the underground church would grow in unity and in numbers.
  2. Afghanistan is third on the 2013 World Watch List for good reason. Christians are extremely vulnerable. Their families feel compelled to save the family honor by forcing believers to reconvert to Islam. If these efforts are unsuccessful, Christians may be disowned, banished, abused, kidnapped or even killed. The authorities and extremist groups form another threat to the lives of Christians. Pray for the safety of Christians and for strength to remain faithful in the midst of their persecution.
  3. As allied troops pull out next year, uncertainty surrounds the possible scenarios that could play out. The government may feel the need to work together with extremist groups, or an extremist group could entirely take over the government. Scenarios in which the freedom of religion increases are not very probable apart from God’s intervention. Pray that the transition to a “new Afghanistan” will go smoothly and that local Christians will miraculously have increased opportunities to meet each other.
  4. Pray that presidential election in 2014 would not result in civil war.
  5. Pray for peace negotiations with the Taliban, that their power would be broken and this war-ravished country would know peace.
  6. Women in Afghanistan have few rights; many are denied even basic education or medical care. They are often neglected, abused and mistreated, and authorities offer no protection. Pray that Afghan women would be protected and honored, and that, through the saving power of Christ, they would know the love of our Father in heaven.
  7. According to the 2012 Corruption Perception Index, Afghanistan is grouped with Somalia and North Korea as one of the three most corrupt countries in the world. It is also one of the biggest exporters of drugs. The corruption and drug trade threaten the development of Afghanistan, even as they bind countless people in dependence on this “shadow economy.” Pray that Christ would break the power of corruption and drugs, and that the Christians’ lives of godly integrity would be beacons of hope.
  8. Thank God for the many Afghans who are listening to Christian radio stations or downloading Christian materials from the Internet. Some are genuine, and often isolated, believers; others are disappointed with Islam and want to know more about Jesus Christ. Pray that God would change lives as the Word is preached through these media outlets.
  9. Every year Christians lose their lives for their faith. Though these “persecution incidents” are often not reported, the pain and trauma facing those who are left behind are immense. Pray that God would comfort the families of martyrs and strengthen their faith so they can endure in these difficult times.
  10. Join Afghan Christians in praying for terrorists, extremists and others who oppose Christianity there and in the West. Pray that God would touch their hearts and draw them to Himself through His great love and mercy, and that their zeal would be for the worship and service of Christ.
  11. Pray for awakening and breakthrough among Afghans. Pray that those who are lost will be saved by Christ.
  12. Pray that God will raise up mighty warriors among indigenous believers to fight for Christ’s kingdom by praying, preaching the Word, and making disciples.

Pray for Successful Bible Balloon Launches

In the late hours of Oct. 23, the staff of a VOM partner organization gathered to launch Bibles into North Korea via balloon. The launch party prepared packages containing lightweight Korean New Testaments, attached them to hydrogen-filled balloons, and released a total of 3,600 into the air. After the overnight launch, the group was just 675 short of their goal of sending 48,000 into a country where the Bible is forbidden. As winter approaches, fewer days will provide weather conditions suitable for balloon launches.

A launch team prepares to launch Bible balloons at a launch earlier this year.

Pray for Believers Blamed for Villagers' Deaths

“Those Christians have to renounce their faith! Otherwise, more people will die,” was what a witch doctor told a remote community in Laos. In March 2013 two evangelists brought the Gospel message to three Hmong and Khmu villages located nearly three hours from modern transportation. As a result, 178 people received Christ and 18 were baptized. Less than a month later, three men died in a series of unrelated deaths. One was given the wrong medicine, one died in his sleep, and the third was accidentally electrocuted while trying to run a cable line. The shaken community consulted with a witch doctor who concluded that the strange new religion brought to the village had angered their ancestors. He said the Christians should renounce their faith or leave the village or more people would die. The community leader told the believers to renounce their faith. So far, all of them remain committed, but they may soon be forced out of the village.

Pastor Saeed Transfered To Rajai Shahr, Even More Dangerous

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 07:03 AM PST

The following excerpt is taken from a Washington Post blog post.

Though months ago such a move was threatened as Iranian officials pressured Pastor Saeed to recant his faith in Christ and convert to Islam, the transfer, which occurred Sunday, was abrupt and unexplained.

Pastor Saeed's family in Iran who had been regularly able to visit him once a week was told he had inexplicably been transferred and was denied the ability to see him.

This deeply disturbing development not only cuts him off from contact with his Iranian family but poses a severe danger to Pastor Saeed's life.

One diplomat described Rajai Shahr Prison in these unmistakably grave terms:

"Rajai Shahr is the place where political prisoners who are seen as a nuisance, are stowed away. Going to Karaj is a severe punishment. Once in there one stops to be a human being. One is put out of sight, even of human rights activists and the press. In Rajaï Shahr, political prisoners have to share cells with dangerous criminals like murderers, rapists and drug addicts who don't hesitate to attack their cell mates. They have nothing to lose: many of them are condemned to death anyway. Murders or unexplained deaths are a regular occurrence."

Send Us Your Videos and Spread the Word

Posted: 11 Nov 2013 02:01 PM PST

We still need your help with a video project for the next Secret Church Gathering. Our topic for SC14 is “The Cross and Everyday Life.” So, during the month of November we’re collecting videos, slices of life, from all over the world. Grab your phone or video camera and capture a 1-2 minute video that  is an example of an  ”everyday” moment of your life AND tell your friends to do the same! It can be anything from sharing a meal with friends, hanging out at a book store, driving to school, playing soccer with your kids in the yard, a meeting at work, something you do in a normal day. You can upload or email your video on our project site, ShareYourVideo.net (there are a few more details there).

We’ll post the finished video via our social media channels next spring. We’re looking forward to seeing what you do in a day.  And, we hope you’ll join us on Good Friday, 2014, to look at what the Word says about how the gospel affects these everyday moments.

Pray for Weng Goodluck Tshua

Pray for Weng Goodluck Tshua

In March 2010, when Weng Goodluck Tshua was just three weeks old, Fulani Muslims attacked his village in Dogo Nahawa, Nigeria. His mother, father, and seven other members of his family were among the 501 Christians who were killed in the attack. The attackers set numerous houses and buildings on fire, including Weng’s house. Someone pulled him out in order to save his life, but his feet had already been consumed by the flames. As he grew up, Weng could not learn to walk or run. In Sept., 2013, a VOM prosthetics team created a specialized pair of prosthetic shoes that have given Weng a new perspective. The shoes have three inner-layers that can be removed as he grows up. The medical team will return in time to create a new pair of shoes. Today, the happy three-year-old has learned to take his first steps.

Nov. 01, 2013 | Cuba

Pray for Pastor Yiorvis Denis and his church members

CUBA: Pastor Yiorvis Bravo Denis, 28, is currently under house arrest along with other members of his house church in Camagüey, Cuba. Pastor Yiorvis obtained the house from his uncle, who in 2008, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison for his Christian activities. Now the Cuban government is seeking to evict the pastor from the house, which also serves as his house church. Since October 5th, state security, police and Communist Party members have surrounded the house, shouting slogans and curses at the believers. Please pray for Pastor Yiorvis and his church members.

9 Things You Should Know About Persecution of Christians in 2013

Posted: 31 Oct 2013 02:00 AM PDT

This post, by Joe Carter, originally appeared on The Gospel Coalition blog.

Christians are the single most widely persecuted religious group in the world today. As we pray for the persecuted church, here are nine things you should know about the plight of believers around the globe:

burnt-church1. Christian churches around the world have set apart the month of November to remember and pray for the persecuted church, through the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP).

2. According to the U.S. Department of State, Christians in more than 60 countries face persecution from their governments or surrounding neighbors simply because of their belief in Christ.

3. With the exception of four official state-controlled churches in Pyongyang, Christians in North Korea face the risk of detention in the prison camps, severe torture and, in some cases, execution for practicing their religious beliefs. North Koreans suspected of having contact with South Korean or other foreign missionaries in China, and those caught in possession of a Bible, have been known to be executed.

4. In Syria, Christians are increasingly becoming the target of violent attacks. Catholic and Orthodox groups in Syria say the anti-government rebels have committed “awful acts” against Christians, including beheadings, rapes and murders of pregnant women. A special ‘Vulnerability Assessment of Syria’s Christians‘ conducted by the World Watch unit of Open Doors International from June 2013 warned that Syrian Christians are the victims of “disproportionate violence and abuse.” They warned further that Christian women in Syria are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse.

5. In August 2013, Egypt faced what has been called the the worst anti-Christian violence in seven centuries: 38 churches were destroyed, 23 vandalized; 58 homes were burned and looted and 85 shops, 16 pharmacies and 3 hotels were demolished; 6 Christians were killed in the violence and 7 were kidnapped.

6. The bloodiest attack on Christians in Pakistan’s history occurred in September 2013. Two suicide bombers exploded shrapnel laden vests outside All Saints’ Church in the old city of Peshawar. Choir members and children attending Sunday school were among 81 people killed. The attack left 120 people wounded, with 10 of them in critical condition.

7. During an attack on a shopping mall in Nairobi in September, Islamic terrorists asked people for the name of Muhammad’s mother or to recite a verse from the Quran in order to identify non-Muslims. One of the terrorists announced, “We have come to kill you Christians and Kenyans because you have been killing our women and children in Somalia. Any Muslims can go.”

8. Four Christians in Iran will get 80 lashes each this month for drinking wine during a communion service. Ahmed Shaheed, UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, said that it is common practice for Christians to be punished for violating theocratic laws. In the UN report Shaheed wrote: ‘At least 20 Christians were in custody in July 2013. In addition, violations of the rights of Christians, particularly those belonging to evangelical Protestant groups, many of whom are converts, who proselytize to and serve Iranian Christians of Muslim background, continue to be reported.’

9. An average of 100 Christians around the world are killed each month for their faith. (Note: There are several sources that claim the numbers are as high as 100,000+ a year. In the absence of solid evidence for those numbers, though, I chose to go with the more empirically verifiable estimate.)
