Interview with a Christian Vampire

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 09:16 PM PDT

'Gospels of sin management' presume a Christ with no serious work other than redeeming humankind ... [and] they foster 'vampire Christians,' who only want a little blood for their sins but nothing more to do with Jesus until heaven.

-Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy

DOCTOR VANHELSING'S JOURNAL

31 October. On the dark side of twilight, I at last have reached Count Dracula's castle. The Count greeted me eagerly if not warmly, then ushered me into his dining room, where "Our encounter will be most appropriate," whatever that means. I am grateful for the food offered me, but the Count eats naught. From across the table he stares, intently, or almost hungry. Those eyes... I have a creeping feeling this interview was a mistake, but Dracula is the most influential Christian in this region, and I must challenge him with the questions that have seized my psyche over the last three months!

Those eyes... more 'undead' than alive...

COUNT: What brings you to my home, Doctor...?

ZBLOG: VanHelsing. My name is Zonder VanHelsing. I've come to interview you about the King you serve.

COUNT: I serve no King. I am the sovereign of Transylvania, and you do well to remember that, my good Doctor.

ZBLOG: Forgive me, I just mean, it is said you've been a Christian for some time now?

COUNT: Oh. Yes, in my youth I made a decision for Christ.

ZBLOG: What did you decide?

COUNT: What do you mean? I decided to believe the gospel.

ZBLOG: Please tell me, what is "the gospel"?

COUNT: [He furrows his brow, as if trying to decide whether I'm playing a joke. There are tense moments, but at last he continues.] Everyone knows what the gospel is, but very well, I'll play your game.

We're sinners. If we believe in Jesus, his blood saves us from hell. Jesus died on my behalf so that I do not have to. And that's that.

ZBLOG: And how does your decision to accept Christ connect to discipleship?

COUNT: What do you mean?

ZBLOG: Well, I've recently read in Dr. Scot McKnight's new book The King Jesus Gospel: The Original Good News Revisited that as many as 75 percent of Americans have made a decision to accept Christ, but only about 25 percent Americans go to church regularly.

McKnight also claims this: "Most of evangelism today is obsessed with getting someone to make a decision; the apostles, however, were obsessed with making disciples." So, tell me about your transition from the Decided to the Discipled.

COUNT: Discipled, what nonsense. I became a disciple when I decided to believe in the power of Jesus' blood! The blood is the life! You cannot let the power of the blood and salvation by faith become eclipsed by discipleship. No, you don't need to do anything if you know and believe the central idea of "justification by faith."

ZBLOG: It's interesting you think so, since justification by faith isn't mentioned in the Gospels. And I happen to believe that if we're not growing in our faith, we're, er... undead.

COUNT: You try my patience, Doctor! Why don't you tell me what you think the gospel is!

ZBLOG: I mean no disrespect, Count. But Dr. McKnight presents some very convincing reasons for us to consider 1 Corinthians 15:1-5 as the core apostolic gospel.

COUNT: [He turns to the 1 Corinthians passage in my Bible and reads aloud.] "For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve."

You call that the gospel? No no no, too much "according to the Scriptures." What could the Old Testament possibly have to do with the gospel? I'll take John 3:16 over McKnight's version of the gospel any day. [The Count gets up from his seat and begins walking to my side of the table.]

ZBLOG: Well, it's not "McKnight's version" of the gospel. McKnight claims the 1 Corinthians 15 passage is what all the Apostles passed on as the gospel.

And it's funny you should ask what the Old Testament has to do with the gospel. McKnight makes an intriguing case that the story of Jesus is only properly understood when it's told within the larger story of Israel.

COUNT:  Hmmm. [Is the Count staring at my neck? It looks like he's staring at my neck!] Looks delicious. I mean, the book! Where can I read some more of Dr. McKnight's delicious book?

ZBLOG: If you're interested,
read this excerpt of The King Jesus Gospel...

[I threw the book at the Count and ran for my life. Once I made it back to the village church, I knew I was safe. At least for a while...]

Feel like your knowledge of the gospel is more "undead" than alive?

If you agreed more with the Count than with Dr. VanHelsing, you will be intrigued, stretched, challenged, and encouraged by Scot McKnight's new book.

What Happens After Secret Church?

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 03:36 PM PDT

There is a lot of excitement that builds around Secret Church.  There is no way to adequately describe the evening as we come together, from all over the world, to worship, study God’s Word, and pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters.  It is an incredible experience.

But what happens after Secret Church?

Our hope is that every participant will take what they have learned and share it with others.  We don’t want Secret Church to be for just one night.  We want participants to come away with an insatiable hunger for God's Word and we want people, when they leave, to be equipped to share what they've learned with others.

How do you do that?

After Secret Church has concluded we encourage participants to dive in to the material even more deeply. The study from that night can be broken down into sections and studied at a slower, more in depth pace.  A small group, for example, can go back through the study guide at their own pace, learning as much as they can.  Then that small group can take what they have learned and re-teach it in other contexts. Secret Church is not just to learn information. The goal is to grow in Christ together and equip one another to go into the world together.

For further study you can find additional Secret Church resources by going to our online Resource Library.

"Prayer is the pulse of life; by it the doctor can tell what is the condition of the heart. The sin of prayerlessness is a proof for the ordinary Christian or minister that the life of God in the soul is in deadly sickness and weakness." - Andrew Murray

Exodus 34:9

On Oct. 17, Algerian authorities ordered the closure of a church in the country's second largest city because the church did not have a registration certificate, according to a VOM worker in the region. The 90-member House of Hope church in Oran runs several ministries in the Ain-Turck neighborhood, including a Bible school, a media studio, a safe house and a network of evangelists. When church representatives visited the state office to inquire about necessary documentation, no one could tell them what was required for church registration. After further inquiries, the minister of the interior told church representatives that he did not know who ordered the church to close. "It looks like an attempt from the authorities to test the church's reaction," said a VOM worker. "In Algeria, nothing is guaranteed, so we trust our Lord and move boldly." House of Hope is continuing its services. Pray for favor from the authorities as well as wisdom and perseverance for the church's leaders.

Pakistan--Asia Bibi Reportedly Beaten
VOM Contacts, Compass Direct News

Psalm 6:8-10

A Pakistani newspaper has reported that Asia Bibi was beaten by a prison guard earlier this month. The guard was reportedly suspended for three months, and a source told Compass Direct News that jail authorities pressured Asia and Ashiq to refrain from reporting the incident. Ashiq told VOM workers that jail management has been good to Asia. He reported that Asia said, "I am not horrified by this incident. God is with me; I have a Bible in my cell. I feel strong and protected." Asia, who received a death sentence last year after being convicted of blasphemy, has been kept in a high-security cell in Sheikhupura jail because of death threats against her. Continue to pray for Asia's safety, and pray for VOM staff and friends as they travel to Washington, D.C., in a few weeks to present a petition appealing for mercy in Asia's case.

Nigeria--Boko Haram Kill Second Christian Leader in Three Months
Compass Direct News

Psalm 146:9

A second Nigerian evangelist has been murdered by members of the Islamist group Boko Haram less than three months after the group killed a Maiduguri pastor and church secretary. Mark Ojunta, a 36-year-old evangelist from southern Nigeria, was working with Calvary Ministries (CAPRO) among the Kotoko people in northeastern Nigeria when he was shot on Aug. 27 in Maiduguri. CAPRO had evacuated all staff members working among the Shuwa Arab, Kotoko and Kanuri peoples after learning that they were on a Boko Haram hit list. But Ojunta had returned to teach a class after his family was evacuated. A CAPRO press statement stated that he died "as a martyr on his field among the Kotokos." Four days before his death, Ojunta reportedly declined an invitation to take a position at CAPRO's International office in London. He leaves behind his wife, Ema, and two young children. Pray for his family, CAPRO staff and all Christians in Nigeria.

Preparing for Secret Church

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 03:45 PM PDT

If your church or small group has signed up for Secret Church next Friday, November 4, we want to encourage you to set aside some intentional time in prayer as you prepare for the simulcast.

In his recent interview with Trevin Wax, Pastor David had this to say concerning the topic “Famiy, Marriage, Sex, and the Gospel”:

“Daniel Heimbach, who wrote a wonderful book on sexual morality and the gospel, has said:

"The stakes in the current conflict over sex are more critical, more central, and more essential than in any controversy the church has ever known. This is a momentous statement, but I make it soberly, without exaggeration. Conflict over sex these days is not just challenging tradition, orthodoxy, and respect for authority in areas such as ordination, marriage, and gender roles. And it does not just affect critically important doctrines like the sanctity of human life, the authority and trustworthiness of scripture, the Trinity, and the incarnation of Christ. Rather, war over sex among Christians is now raging over absolutely essential matters of faith without which no one can truly be a Christian in the first place—matters such as sin, salvation, the gospel, and the identify of God himself."

I agree with Heimbach. So we are going to dive into some of the most sensitive, and I am convinced the most important, issues that we are facing not just in our culture but in other cultures around the world.

  • Manhood
  • Womanhood
  • Marriage
  • Parenting
  • Singleness
  • Sex
  • Divorce
  • Homosexuality
  • Same-sex marriage
  • Polygamy
  • Pornography
  • Adoption
  • Abortion

I want us to look at how God's Word uniquely and redemptively addresses each of these issues. I want us to see how the gospel transforms our understanding of family, marriage, sex, and a host of related (and controversial) issues that are ultimately foundational for the display of the glory of God in our lives, in the church, and in the world.”

Begin praying now for those in attendance, our time together in God’s Word, and for our hearts and minds to be transformed as we look at what scripture has to say about these issues.
