On Counting our Blessings: The "One Thousand Gifts" Book and App

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 11:37 AM PST

Does gratitude come easy? Not for me. That's why Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts book and mobile app captured my attention. Let's start with the book.

Seeing and Receiving our Blessings: Ann Voskamp's Book One Thousand Gifts

Learn More

As the summary of One Thousand Gifts reads, Voskamp's book shows readers "a way of seeing that opens [our] eyes to ordinary amazing grace." I roundly concur. (At time of writing, I've read about half of Voskamp's book.)

I'd like to share one of my favorite parts from One Thousand Gifts. Voskamp describes how things change for her when she begins to literally count her blessings...

Excerpt from One Thousand Gifts

Across the backside [of the scrap paper], on a whim, a dare, I scratch it down: Gift List. I begin the list. Not of gifts I want but of gifts I already have.

  1. Morning shadows across the old floors
  2. Jam piled high on the toast
  3. Cry of blue jay from high in the spruce...

They are just the common things and maybe I don't even know they are gifts really until I write them down and that is really what they look like. Gifts He bestows. This writing it down - it is sort of like ... unwrapping love...

Writing the list, it makes me feel ... happy. All day. I can hardly believe how it does that, that running stream of consciousness, river I drink from and I'm quenched in, a surging stream of grace and it's wild how it sweeps me away ... I can't understand why it does that...

Well, if all these were gifts that God gives - then wasn't my writing down the list like ... receiving. Like taking with thanks... "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them..." Gave thanks...

[Jesus] took the bread, even the bread of death, and gave thanks. I look down at my list. This thanks that I am doing - it seems so ... crude. Trivial. If this list is the learning of the language of [gratitude,] this feels like ... guttural groanings. But perhaps the "full of grace" vocabulary begins haltingly, simply, like a child, thankful for the childlike...

But doesn't the kingdom of heaven belong to such as these?

Secret Church 11 – Reflections – Part 1

Posted: 28 Nov 2011 03:00 AM PST

The following is the first post in a three part series by DMI Intern, Eric Parker.  In this series Eric shares his thoughts on Secret Church 11 and the current cultural climate in relation to “Family, Marriage, Sex, and the Gospel”:

________________

Secret Church 11 – “Family, Marriage, Sex, and the Gospel

Consider, for a moment, how deeply our world, and culture, is steeped in sexual sin on a variety of different levels. Let this sink in—Every second, 372 Internet users type adult search terms into search engines. At this given moment, there are 40 million prostitutes at work in the world. Sex trafficking is a $58 billion industry worldwide. In the United States, over 45 million abortions have occurred since 1973. 1.4 million abortions occur every year; 3,000 abortions occur every day; an abortion occurs every 20-25 seconds.

The fact that this may not even bother us, is itself a shameful indicator of where we are. It is safe to say that our world has reached an unprecedented point in its history. Knowing that many of those realities are true in our culture, then it is safe to say that we are drowning in sexual abominations. But in America's inception, the family was understood, and defined, in light of Judeo-Christian values that found their roots in the Hebrew culture we see expressed in the Old Testament. But these are perilous days when it comes to the family, marriage, sex, and the gospel.

Dr. Platt did well to start with, what I think is a really helpful quote from pastor-scholar, Mark Dever. He writes:

The most important revolution in the last century has been the sexual revolution… Contraception replaced conception. Pleasure was separated from responsibility.  It was as if a license was given out, legitimizing the bending of every part of our lives around serving ourselves. Since that time, divorce, remarriage, abortion, premarital sex, and extramarital sex, as well as homosexuality have been accepted by increasing percentages of the public. Pornography is huge business. This is not just a problem with society out there. Many churches have found their members plagued by failed marriages and illicit affairs, by so-called private sins that turn into public disgraces, some of which are known, some of which are not yet known.

Current Cultural Reflections

We could go on and on about all the areas of our culture that have eroded away over the last 100 years, but it would be more helpful to make a few observations about where our culture is today, and where we may be going.

Where We Are—The Sexual Polarization

As Mark Dever has so helpfully pointed out, the sexual revolution may be one of the most drastic shifts in our culture. Much of the decay of marriage, sexuality, gender, etc. can be traced back to the sexual revolution. But it seems that we are beginning to see a polarization occurring. This is a polarization between those who would claim to want total "sexual liberation" and people who have bitten the fruit, yet have been left wanting.

What I mean by "polarization" is that there seems to be a spectrum, of sorts, on which you either have people who are extremely open with their own sexuality, or people who would fall into traditional conceptions of purity when it comes to their openness about their sexuality. But there are increasingly less people who would fall in the middle of this spectrum.

On one end of the spectrum, you have an overall attitude that sex in all forms is a good thing, and to put any restrictions on someone's sexual freedom would be wrong. This works itself out in many different forms.

For instance, the pornography industry continues to grow, and has become one of the greatest profit generating industries in the world. On the global scale, pornography has grown from about $57 billion in revenue in 2003, to $97 billion world wide in 2006. I shutter to think of the statistics today.

Or the fact that there is something called "Gay rights", as distinguished from human rights, says volumes about this far-end of the spectrum. Albert Mohler, in a post entitled Evangelicals and the Gay Moral Revolution, said:

In less than a single generation, homosexuality has gone from something almost universally understood to be sinful, to something now declared to be the moral equivalent of heterosexuality—and deserving of both legal protection and public encouragement.

In this postmodern age, we live in a country that has functionally given way to relativism, to the point that any group, whether previously understood as immoral, or not, is seen now as amoral, and deserving of full acceptance, as well as endorsement.

Or think of the impact of ideological feminism in politics, academia, and the Church challenging Biblical understandings of men, women, gender, sexuality, and marriage.

Consider that in most secular humanities courses within our western universities, gender is seen to be something that is socially constructed. This is completely foreign to any time period of recorded history, except the last 50 years. Think about the impact of this notion. For gender to be distinguished from one's "sex," is to say that gender is not understood in light of ones biological association. Once gender is disconnected from biology, identity becomes fluid. And with such fluid identity, it's only inevitable (and is indeed happening) for marriage, family, relationships between men and women (whatever that means), and even society to be degraded. For gender is one of the main foundations upholding marriage, family, and relationships between men and women.

That is a little bit about where we are today in terms of the sexual disparity of our culture and world. We will look at, what I call the "new conservative" end of the spectrum in the next post.

Next week – Part 2 – The Sexual Polarization—The "New Conservative"

Hey Bloggers, we're giving away copies of Gary Thomas' new book Every Body Matters: Strengthening Your Body to Strengthen Your Soul to bloggers for review.

Every Body Matters explores how becoming proactive about our physical health can lead to "a fortified soul" that's better able to serve and love others. Thomas includes ways to fight health-related temptation, and how we can pursue transormation from "heads without bodies" into whole-bodied servants of God.

I've included an excerpt from Every Body Matters below about "faithful fitness" so you can get a better feel for Thomas' approach. If you're interested in reviewing Every Body Matters on your blog, please sign up below!

How to Participate in the Every Body Matters Blog Tour

  1. Sign up below by Thursday, Dec. 1. If your blog is selected, we will ship a  copy of Every Body Matters to you.
  2. Please post your review on your blog during the week of 1/2 or 1/9. Leave a comment here with a link to your review, because we're interested in your thoughts on the book!
  3. In your post, please mention that Zondervan provided you with the book free of charge, for the purpose of review.
  4. Finally, publish your review on another book website such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or LibraryThing.

An Excerpt from Every Body Matters

If swimming laps or doing Pilates won't substitute for regular study, prayer, and spiritual devotions, but taking off the shackles of laziness, overeating, and the physical debilitation brought about by ignoring our physical fitness can set our souls on a course of pursuing God with a renewed vigor, earnestness, and delight.

Christianity Today columnist Carolyn Arends writes of feeling convicted about "spiritualizing" her inclination toward avoiding physical fitness by focusing on "soul things" instead of "body things." A wake-up call provided by her parents' bout with ill health led to a significant life change, after which Carolyn concludes the following:

Jesus called us to love God with our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. Just as his words disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed, they call the overactive to stillness and activate the overly still. They restore the soul to those who overemphasize the body, and redeem the body for those who focus only on the soul...

For your own health and vitality, your own spirituality, your own family, and your own personal satisfaction — will you consider [the idea of 'faithful fitness']? Not as a diet. Not as a fad. But as a life change, birthed as a spiritual exercise, a part of your worship, a new way of surrendering to God's presence in your life...

I pointed out to [my son] once how, though exercise and staying in shape require a lot of work and even regular pain, not being in shape requires its own pains and labors. If I'm going to hurt in this fallen world — and everyone of us will — I'd rather hurt and be sore getting in shape than hurt and be sore because my body isn't fit.

By God's design, we are a people with souls who desperately yearn for intimacy with God — people whose souls reside in bodies that can hinder or help this pursuit. Which will it be?

"Prayer is the pulse of life; by it the doctor can tell what is the condition of the heart. The sin of prayerlessness is a proof for the ordinary Christian or minister that the life of God in the soul is in deadly sickness and weakness." - Andrew Murray

West Bank--Christian Church Fears Shut Down by Palestinian Authority
Source: VOM Contacts

John 10:10

The leaders of First Baptist Church in Bethlehem are becoming increasingly concerned by growing antagonism against them by the Palestinian Authority. First Baptist Church has operated in Muslim-dominated Bethlehem for more than 30 years, and its leaders are no strangers to persecution. The church has been bombed fourteen times and senior pastor Naim Khoury has been shot at several times. This community opposition seems small compared to what the thriving church of 300 now faces. The ruling Palestinian Authority is trying to shut down the church by refusing to recognize it. This position has severe consequences for church members: Parents can't obtain birth certificates for babies, couples who want to marry cannot get a license, and church members have extreme difficulty in finding employment. Currently, about 70 percent of the congregation is unemployed. A member of a delegation who recently visited the church said, "The intent is obvious: to drive people away from churches in the very city that gave birth to the hope-filled, life-changing message of Jesus Christ." Please pray for the leaders and members of First Baptist Church.

China--Beijing Church's Standoff with Authorities in Reaches Week 32
Source: China Aid Association

Lamentations 3:22

One of China's largest house church groups continues to meet in an outdoor space for worship, in spite a months-long campaign by police to deter them. On Nov. 13, Shouwang Church of Beijing attempted to assemble its members for worship in an outdoor shopping plaza for the 32nd time in as many weeks. The standoff began after the unregistered church was repeatedly forced from indoor meeting spaces and began meeting outdoors in protest. According to information published by the church, at least 27 people headed for the service were arrested, either at the meeting spot or en route. One was sent home, but the remaining 26 believers were taken to 12 different police stations around the city. Fifteen of the arrested were released by midnight that night, while the rest were released slowly throughout the night. The last person was released 48 hours after being arrested. As always, church members waited outside police stations with food and clothing for the detained despite freezing winter temperatures. "We especially give thanks to our God for them; they witnessed the love of being members to each other in the body of Christ. We give thanks to our Lord, for he keeps us and protects us," church leadership wrote in a statement. Thank God for the church's faithfulness, and pray they will be able to meet freely soon.

Iran--Resolution Soon for Youcef Nadarkhani?
Sources: Compass Direct, VOM Sources

2 Timothy 4:7-9

Sources indicate that an Iranian court may make a final ruling in the case of house church pastor Youcef Nadarkhani. Nadarkhani has spent the last 25 months imprisoned in Rasht, Iran, convicted of apostasy for leaving Islam. The standard penalty for this crime is death. A Rasht court was due to make a final decision on his case in September, but instead sent the case on to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. During his trial, the court gave Nadarkhani three opportunities to recant his faith, but he repeatedly refused. Sources close to Nadarkhani indicated that he has undergone physical and psychological torture and that authorities have continued to pressure him to recant. Pray for the upcoming verdict in his trial.
