International Day of Prayer – Sunday 11/13

Posted: 11 Nov 2011 02:15 AM PST

This Sunday, November 13, is the International Day of Prayer. Christians around the world will join together and spend time in concentrated prayer for brothers and sisters experiencing persecution for their faith in Jesus Christ.

More than 100 million Christians worldwide suffer interrogation, arrest, and even death for their faith in Christ. Millions more experience discrimination and alienation.

A recent study from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life revealed that 2.2 billion people (nearly 1/3 of the world's population) live in countries where persecution from the government or society as a whole rose significantly from mid-2006 to mid-2009.

Each year, Open Doors publishes a World Watch List of the top 50 countries where Christ-followers are persecuted. This year's top ten list includes: North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Maldives, Yemen, Iraq, Uzbekistan, and Laos.

We can stand in the gap for our brothers and sisters around the world by praying faithfully as they endure tremendous suffering.

"IDOP presents a tremendous opportunity for millions of people to make a difference in the lives of those faithful Christians who are literally under the gun in countries such as North Korea, Iran, Nigeria and Afghanistan," says Open Doors USA President/CEO Dr. Carl Moeller.

Voice of the Martyrs says, "The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church reminds us to respond to the request that we hear so often from persecuted believers — 'Pray for us.' We can ask God to strengthen their faith and grant them strength and courage when they feel weak, tired or scared."

Will you join us in praying for the persecuted church?

"Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body." Hebrews 13:3
