How Did Secret Church Get Started? Posted: 02 Feb 2012 10:29 AM PST Secret Church Nov 2011 The following is Part 1 of interview with Pastor and author, David Platt: How did Secret Church get started? “Secret Church began at The Church at Brook Hills based on time I had spent with our brothers and sisters in underground Asian house churches. In those contexts, they gather together at the risk of their lives for hours at a time simply to pray, worship, and study the Word. It's simple, raw, dangerous, and satisfying…all at the same time. So we thought, "Why don't we do the same thing?" So the first time we did it, we called it “Secret Church”; but we said, “OK, we can’t do 12 hours; we’ll start with six hours.” We didn't do a whole lot to promote it – just a few announcements to our church and some information on the web. Then from 6 to midnight, that first Friday evening we gathered in our auditorium and studied the Word—no emphasis on music, lights or anything like that, just stripped down bare, just us and the Word of God. We had about 1000 people in attendance. Since then, it began to grow exponentially. We weren't promoting it heavily, but people were drawn to the simplicity and gravity of the Word, and to prayer for the persecuted church around the world. At our last Secret Church, we had over 45,000 people gathered literally from around the world via the simulcast.” Part 2: Where is Secret Church Going?
