Pray for the Persecuted

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 11:00 PM PDT

Each week, we will post some specific ways that we can be praying together for our brothers and sisters around the world who are actively sharing in Christ's suffering through persecution.  Take some time to lift the believers in each of these regions before our Father in heaven.  At the same time, pray for those enacting the persecution to be kindly drawn to repentance and to experience new life through faith in Jesus.

IN SYRIA

The nation of Syria (number 36 on Open DoorsWorld Watch List) has been suffering from a violent civil war for nearly two years now.  As the impact of this struggle has spread and worsened, Syrian Christians have found themselves in the center of the conflict.  Though the physical battle now rages, the spiritual one been raging all along, and Christians are finding victory in Jesus.  Perhaps more than ever, the church is flourishing.

One Syrian pastor says, “We thank God because the Church is united across the country in prayer 24 hours a day, seven days a week; praying for the glory of God to dwell in the Church, praying for an end to the bloodshed, praying for peace in the country, praying for keeping the church’s faithful witness, to reach out to the suffering, to share the divine cure of the gospel, to speak the word of the Lord in all boldness."

He then pleads for their international brothers and sisters to join with them in prayer, not in defeated desperation, but in confidence and thankfulness.  ”We deeply appreciate the prayers of God’s people everywhere; it is a rare time where the Church in Syria is feeling the true oneness of the body of Christ all over the globe. For this, we thank the Lord, for it is a great encouragement to us.”

PRAY

  • Thank God for the encouraging unity that he has given Syrian Christians in this volatile time.
  • Ask God to give believers wisdom and guidance as they seek to know what to do, where to go, and how to act.
  • Ask God to use the witness of their steadfast devotion and love to reach nonbelievers all over the country and world.
  • Ask God to glorify Himself in everything, including the salvation of lost souls by His amazing grace, through faith in Jesus.
  • Ask God to give Christians living in peaceful areas the same perspective of our Syrian pastor who continually thanks God.

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.  … By prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” – Philippians 4:4-7 (emphasis added)
