Last Friday during Secret Church, participants got a special video message from Brother Andrew. Before placing his faith in Christ, Brother Andrew, born in the Netherlands, fought in WWII as a “notorious commando.” God used an ankle injury to begin revealing Himself to him, and after coming home a cripple in his early twenties, Brother Andrew gave his life to Christ. Shortly thereafter, he felt sure that the Lord was leading him to become a missionary.

From the moment he first trusted in Jesus, Brother Andrew’s life has been marked by faith. Most of his ministry consisted of smuggling Bibles into closed, Communist countries. He would transport Bibles across borders and through checkpoints in his blue Volkswagen Beetle, boldly encountering guards and faithfully delivering the good news.

In 1955, Brother Andrew founded Open Doors to expand and prolong his ministry of getting Bibles to persecuted Christians in restricted countries. Today, Open Door continues to serve persecuted Christians through resourcing and equipping them, while simultaneously educating and mobilizing believers who aren’t persecuted so that they can support those who are.

One particularly helpful aspect of their ministry–one that we’ve used quite frequently– is their regular prayer updates. These provide tangible and specific information about persecuted believers so that we can know how to pray for our brothers and sister all over the world.

To learn more about Brother Andrew and Open Doors, read his book, God’s Smuggler, and check out the Open Doors website. It’s a great ministry for serving the persecuted church, though  it challenges and encourages  believers of all contexts.

Some of the information on Brother Andrew is from his biography on Inspirational Christians.
