Pray for the Persecuted

In The News

Unrest is spreading in North Africa and the Middle East. The BBC map below shows the cities in which protests have become violent.

The reason for the protests?  While many Muslims are outraged by a film – produced in the US – that insults the Muslim Prophet Mohammad, according to Open Doors spokesperson Michael Wood, the “unpredictable momentum… suddenly creates a wave of protests and anger.”  This then “puts believers in these hot spots such as Libya and Egypt directly in the line of fire," because to so many, Christianity is directly linked to the United States.

For our Christian brothers and sisters living in these and other areas of the world, the fear is that radical Islamists will catch this violent wind in their sails and act out against them and the work they are doing. Ripples from this “wave of protests and anger” are already reaching other places. The BBC reports that, after the tragic events in Yemen, Egypt, and Libya, other protests have already been staged in Iran, Bangladesh, Iraq, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia. Thankfully, these have yet to be as violent as the first three.

In Light Of All This, How Do We Pray?

- Let us pray that our Christian brothers and sisters will experience peace …

  1. … in their surroundings. We want them to be safe as they continue to advance the Kingdom where they are.
  2. … in their hearts.  We want them to receive comfort and experience calm as they experience the joy of Christ and fear God above man.
  3. … in their relationships. We want them to continue to display love within the Body as well as to those outside. “Blessed are the peacemakers…” (Matthew 5:9).

- Let us pray that the violence does not spread.

- Let us pray for our enemies and the enemies of our brothers and sisters, remembering that “while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son” (Romans 5:10).

- Pray for all those injured in the violence and for the families of those whom we know to have been killed, including those of 4 US diplomats in Libya.  Pray that all are comforted by the one true God as He mercifully and graciously leads them to depend on Him for everything.

- Above all, let us pray that God receives the worship He is due from His creation.
