Secret Church

Day 31: Northern Kenya

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 11:00 PM PDT

During this Secret Church on Good Friday, April 6, we are focusing our prayer time on the people of the Horn of Africa. Throughout the weeks leading up to Secret Church we will post information and prayer requests on this blog. We invite you to join us in learning about and praying for the people of the Horn.

The peoples of northern and northeastern Kenya are predominately Cushitic. Therefore, the areas in which they dwell are included in the Horn of Africa. The largest of these people groups include the Somali, Rendille, Borana and Gabbra with a combined population of over 1,000,000. This region of Kenya shares borders with Ethiopia and Somalia as well as a similar climate as its Cushitic neighbors. Drought and desertification eliminate the option of agriculture, and famine has stretched far across this region.

The primary religions are folk Islam, Sunni Islam and African traditional religions. Because of their arid surroundings, the people groups in northern Kenya tend to be nomadic pastoralists with large herds of camels, sheep, goats and cattle. However, many are settling in towns because there no longer remains enough grazing land to support all the livestock.

Ways to Pray

  • Pray for peace. Insecurity is a major problem. Pray that those who are following Jesus will love their neighbors—who are their traditional enemies—and will risk sharing the gospel with their enemies.
  • Pray for rain. Pray for relief from this current drought and food crisis that is the worst recorded in the last 60 years. Pray for rain to continue in these places to refresh the aquifers and re-grow the grazing land that has disappeared. Pray for the current food relief that is being done in some of the hardest hit areas of Northern Kenya. Pray that God will move the church to give to support these and other projects.
