Secret Church: Information Overload?

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 01:28 PM PDT

If you’ve ever been to Secret Church—or perhaps watched one online—you know that when you finish you feel as if you’ve been trying to sip from a fire hydrant for the past six—er, seven—hours. It’s a bit of information overload. And guess what?! It’s supposed to be!

The Beginning
The idea for Secret Church came from a time when Pastor David was invited to teach a group of house church believers. Day after day they returned to learn more about the Bible. They asked Pastor David to teach them about the entire Old Testament, and when he finished, they asked him to walk through the entire New Testament—in a day! As they learned about the Bible, they furiously scribbled notes so they could take what they were learning and share it with others. This sparked questions at Brook Hills: “Is the Word of God enough for us? If we strip away all the “extras,” will people still come to hear God’s Word preached?”

So, we had the first Secret Church gathering, and people came. And twelve Secret Church gatherings later, people are still coming, hungry for God’s Word!

Why So Much?
Secret Church is one small way we can identify with the persecuted church around the world. We come together for a longer-than-normal time (for us in the United States) of studying the Word of God and cover a large amount of material. Believers in other parts of the world risk their lives to gather in secret and soak in all they can. Since they don’t know when they will be able to gather together again, they must take advantage of their limited time together.

Pastor David is also intentional about the topic that is chosen and the extent of the information that is covered. The material that we study during one night of Secret Church will be used in many other contexts around the world. For some believers this may be the only biblical training resource they will receive. It may seem like too much information to cover in one night, but once it’s translated into other languages (at a slower pace), the teaching for that night is a wealth of information for personal study and in discipling others.

We also hope that this one night won’t be the only time that you study the material covered. Our desire is for individuals and small groups to go back and study the material presented in the weeks and months after Secret Church. That’s why we provide the study guide—not just for note-taking but for further study. We also hope that you won’t keep what you’re learning to yourself! Share what God is teaching you through His Word to others.

All of the past Secret Church resources are available in our online Resource Library. You can watch or listen online or download the audio, video, and study guide for each study at no charge. You can also purchase DVDs, CDs, and study guides from each study in our online store.
