Day 33: Refugees

Posted: 03 Apr 2012 11:00 PM PDT

During this Secret Church on Good Friday, April 6, we are focusing our prayer time on the people of the Horn of Africa. Throughout the weeks leading up to Secret Church we will post information and prayer requests on this blog. We invite you to join us in learning about and praying for the people of the Horn.

Many people in the Horn of Africa are refugees and many more live alongside those refugees. In this region, many refugees have fled war or conflict and others come to find food and water. Many are fleeing from oppressive environments where the choice to follow Christ is very costly. Those who have reached refugee camps face problems ranging from a lack of education to a complete lack of healthcare or sanitation. Others are able to enter larger cities but still face language and cultural barriers, separation from family and friends, and diminished access to services.

If you live in a metropolitan area, chances are there are refugees in your city. These individuals have "made it" out of the refugee camp, but many are unprepared for the challenges they will face in America. Many cannot drive, have never seen a grocery store or cooked with an oven. For the majority who don't speak English, tasks such as visiting the doctor, shopping, following directions, talking with the landlord, finding a job, and speaking with their children's teachers are extremely taxing.

Connections

  • Research people groups that are refugees in your area. Pray for these people as they integrate into your community and for God to give you opportunities to engage them with the gospel.
  • Research which organizations in your area help during the refugee resettlement process. Call and ask if there are any ways you can volunteer to help with refugees. Pray about whether this is something you would like to do either for a day or more long-term.

Ways to Pray

  • As people flee from hardships and encounter more difficulties in the future, ask for God to provide for their needs and that they will recognize Him for his mercy in their lives.
  • Pray for those who have fled and are now separated from their families. Pray they will find hope in their heavenly Father.
  • Although Muslim background believers (those who are Christians from a Muslim background) always face a high cost when they choose to follow Christ, ask God to provide more opportunities for people to hear, accept, and spread the message of hope in their new environments.
