Secret Church

Fighting the Natural for the Sake of the Gospel

Posted: 15 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Throughout the month of March, we will be posting daily about Chinese Muslims, the prayer focus for our upcoming Secret Church gathering. We invite you to learn about Chinese Muslims and pray with us for God's glory to be made known among them. If you would like to read other posts in this blog series, you can find them here.

“I don't know how to begin a conversation with a Hui person. We have nothing in common. Growing up my parents taught me to despise Hui people because in Ningxia it is easier for them to advance in school than a Han student. Their tests scores can be lower than mine and still get admitted to universities ahead of me simply because they are Hui.”

Lily* is a local Han who grew up in Ningxia, a region where more than two million Hui live. I quickly learned after meeting her that she had recently become a follower of Jesus. I asked her if local believers shared the gospel with Hui Muslims, and she responded with the statement above. “I don't know how to begin a conversation with a Hui person.”

Through Lily's story, I began to understand the racial tension that exists between Han and Hui in Northwest China, especially in Ningxia. Today there are house churches and Hui neighborhoods in every large city, but most churches aren't reaching out to the Hui around them or attempting to spread the gospel to their Muslim neighbors.

As Lily and I continued to spend time together, I watched her fight her natural inclination to ignore the Hui people she met. She helped me ask questions to learn about the different tourist sites, and she often used me to open the door for conversations with Hui in her community. In every interaction, she always finished by asking for the person's phone number so they could talk again.

Lily yearns to remove the barrier between her people and the Hui. She longs to share the gospel with them without any worldly differences holding her back.

PLEASE PRAY

  • Pray for Lily in Ningxia who has a passion to share the Gospel with Hui people but doesn't know how to begin the conversation.
  • Pray that God will show her the natural connections she shares with Hui people, and that God will give her boldness to proclaim the Gospel to all the Hui she encounters.
  • Pray for God to give believers all over China a vision and a passion to start boldly proclaiming the Gospel to the Hui in their communities.
