Reconciliation

Throughout the month of March, we will be posting daily about Chinese Muslims, the prayer focus for our upcoming Secret Church gathering. We invite you to learn about Chinese Muslims and pray with us for God's glory to be made known among them. If you would like to read other posts in this blog series, you can find them here.

All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:18-19, ESV)

As many as 5,000 people fought with sticks and burned several houses over a weekend in October 2004, in violence between Han and Hui people. The violence began after members of two families from separate villages fought over a traffic dispute. The fighting resulted in seven dead and forty-two injured.

The government longs for harmony among the 56 people groups who call themselves citizens of China, but they have been unable to procure it. Being reconciled to God is the first step for the Han and Hui to be truly reconciled to one another. The Chinese government is concerned that Muslims in the northwest of the country will rebel and set up their own Islamic State. As historical evidence reveals, this is a very real threat. In the 1800's Muslims managed to reign for about a decade in the Northwest of China from Lanzhou all the way to Kashgar and in the Southwest from Kunming to Dali. The central government employed deceit and brute force to reduce the Muslims to submission, but not without both sides losing millions of lives, as well as destroying the wealth of those regions. This legacy has resulted in continued racial tensions that erupt with the slightest provocation. Since many Han believers view the Hui as fierce fighters they struggle with fear and some doubt that God can save the Hui. The Hui are also slow to make friends with Han people.

PLEASE PRAY

  • Ask God to break down the barriers between the Han and the Hui … softening the hearts of all people.
  • Ask God to help Han believers live out reconciliation by loving the Hui and not being afraid of them.
  • Ask God to help Han churches in predominantly Hui areas to start sensitive Gospel outreach to their Hui neighbors.
