Day 4: Islam

Posted: 29 Feb 2012 10:00 PM PST

During this Secret Church on Good Friday, April 6, we are focusing our prayer time on the people of the Horn of Africa. Over the next six weeks we will post information and prayer requests on this blog. We invite you to join us in learning about and praying for the people of the Horn.

Islam in the Horn by percentage ranges from approximately 10% in Kenya, 36% in Eritrea, 45% in Ethiopia, 96% in Djibouti and almost 100% in Somalia. The most important Islamic religious practices, such as the daily ritual prayers and fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, are observed both in urban centers as well as in rural areas among both settled peoples and nomadic groups. Many Muslims in the Horn perform the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Muslims of the Horn believe that nothing happens in life unless God wills it to be. It is futile to think of changing what God has written for a life. On the Day of Judgment, everyone must give an account of actions and knowledge of the Quran (God's book given to Mohamed by the angel Gabriel). Hopefully, the good will outweigh the bad, and God will show mercy. Hope is fragile and depends on works that might gain God's favor. There is no conviction that sin separates man from God. Jesus is believed to be a prophet, not the Lamb of God given for the sins of man. Christians are generally thought of as unbelievers who are misguided and often evil.

Ways to Pray

  • Pray that Muslims in the Horn will see the futility of their attempts to earn favor with God. Ask the Father to open their hearts to the gospel and help them to see that Jesus is the only way.
  • Pray that Muslims will see that Jesus is much more than a prophet and that they will embrace Him as their Savior.
  • Pray for Muslim leaders in their communities. Ask that they will come to know the One True God and will lead their communities in following Him.
