Day 24: Somali Refugees

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 11:00 PM PDT

During this Secret Church on Good Friday, April 6, we are focusing our prayer time on the people of the Horn of Africa. Throughout the weeks leading up to Secret Church we will post information and prayer requests on this blog. We invite you to join us in learning about and praying for the people of the Horn.

There are approximately 6 million Somalis living outside of Somalia as refugees. Ethiopia (4.2 million), Yemen (900,000), Kenya (500,000), and Djibouti (300,000) host the largest numbers. As many as 150,000 Somali immigrants reside in the United States. Significant Somali communities are located in the metro areas of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Columbus, Ohio, Washington, D.C., New York City, Syracuse, Buffalo, Seattle, Kansas City, San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Maine, and Atlanta. An additional 1.4 million Somalis are displaced within Somalia.

Often, Somalis residing outside of their home country are more open and receptive to the gospel, so there are many opportunities to reach Somalis living in other countries.

Ways to Pray

  • Pray that ministries working with Somali refugees will have a powerful impact in these refugee communities. Pray that these ministries will be intentional about meeting both physical and spiritual needs.
  • Ask God to open doors for churches to be planted in these communities.
  • As Somali refugees come to faith in Christ, pray that they will boldly share with their family and friends who remain in Somalia.
