Secret Church

Day 25: Eritrea

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 11:00 PM PDT

During this Secret Church on Good Friday, April 6, we are focusing our prayer time on the people of the Horn of Africa. Throughout the weeks leading up to Secret Church we will post information and prayer requests on this blog. We invite you to join us in learning about and praying for the people of the Horn.

The land that is now called Eritrea, along with the rest of the Horn, has a rich history reaching far into the past that parallels its more famous ancient Egyptian neighbors. The majority of the population is Tigrinya and another 30% is Tigre. Most of the people have existed in the area longer than the nation itself and are far more tied to their roots than any national patriotism. Partly due to European influence, Eritrea is more religiously diverse than some of its more universally Muslim counterparts in the Horn. However it is hardly a place of religious freedom. Although many churches—such as the Orthodox, Lutheran and Catholic churches—are officially registered in Eritrea, they are required to cooperate with the government and supply records of membership. In addition, those who practice other faiths or meet together from other denominations face imprisonment and severe persecution.

Ways to Pray

  • Pray for the Evangelical Church to grow in spite of the government's religious oppression.
  • Pray for the perseverance of many Eritrean believers who are in prison for their faith.
  • Pray for the gospel to advance through the persecution of many believers in Eritrea.
