Posted: 04 Mar 2012 10:00 PM PST

During this Secret Church on Good Friday, April 6, we are focusing our prayer time on the people of the Horn of Africa. Throughout the weeks leading up to Secret Church we will post information and prayer requests on this blog. We invite you to join us in learning about and praying for the people of the Horn.

Djibouti (pronounced jih-BOOT-ee) is a small country located on the Gulf of Aden and bordered on three sides by Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somaliland. The port, located in the capital city of Djiboutiville, is strategic for much of the region, especially as an entry point for goods being imported to Ethiopia, Kenya, southern Somalia, and other parts of the region.

As the hottest inhabited country in the world, it is difficult to grow much in the way of fruits and vegetables in the country, so most food is imported from surrounding countries. Djibouti is made up primarily of two people groups—the Somali and the Afar—with Somalis comprising around 60% of the population. There are also many foreigners living and working in Djibouti including French, American, Yemeni, Saudi, Omani, and Ethiopian people. The dominant religion of Djibouti is Islam, with 97% of Somali and Afar claiming allegiance to this religion. There are handfuls of Christians among both peoples, with their numbers continuing to grow.

Ways to Pray

  • Djibouti is perhaps the most peaceful country in the Somali region at this time. Pray for peace and stability to continue. Pray for the peaceful political situation in Djibouti to allow open doors for the gospel to go forward among the people groups living in Djibouti.
  • Resources like Scripture and the Jesus film are available in the Afar, Somali, and Arabic languages. Pray that there would be many opportunities for people in Djibouti to hear, read, and watch the stories of Jesus in their own languages and be transformed by Him.
  • The number of Afar and Somali believers is small but growing. Pray for believers to persevere in their faith and have boldness to share truth with many in their cities and villages.
