In January of last year, one of our first English students, a Turk named Sevinc, called and asked my husband and me to be witnesses at her wedding. We were confused. "Wedding? We thought you and Mikail were already married," we replied. Mikail and Sevinc had been married a couple of years earlier at a mosque, but they were not officially married in our country, Bulgaria. They asked us to stand as their witnesses, she explained, "because we want to have a marriage like yours." We were greatly humbled by this statement, not realizing that they had been watching our lives so closely.
