Her son and ours were good friends in elementary school. Over time we've touched very briefly on spiritual things, but she never showed a real interest in pursuing the topic. Recently we went as a family to visit them, hoping for an open door to share with them and for interest on their part to listen. They are a very modern, progressive family by Turkish standards. As we talked over a wide range of topics that evening, we came to the subject of religion. Both Gulay and her husband have serious reservations about Islam. They have seen over and over again how much of a burden it is on people and how it gives less value to women than men, especially putting them at a disadvantage to enter paradise. Her husband has rejected all religion whatsoever. Gulay, however, believes in a god, but rejects many of the things she's been taught about Islam and the Qur'an.
