Hard labor on a construction site was the only job Vahit could find. He worked ten hours a day, seven days a week. In exchange his boss provided a place to stay, lunch, and the possibility of obtaining legal residency.

As a 25 year-old refugee from Syria, Vahit was not used to this kind of routine. For the last seven years of his life he had been in the academy. Most recently he had taught English while working on his master's degree. Then the war started. School stopped. Teaching was over.

A Kurmani Kurd from Northern Syria, Vahit was desirable to disparate groups in his country's civil war. In particular, he was valuable because he knew four different languages—and was working on a fifth. Fearing the possibility of being pulled into a war he didn't want to fight, Vahit knew he had to flee to Turkey. "I didn't want to kill people," he said. "I just want peace,"

Since coming to Turkey, Vahit went from reading English books, writing rap music, and displaying his artwork to the dirt and sweat of construction. Even after finishing work each day he was made to serve drinks to the boss and his friends late into the night. At 6:00 the next morning it started all over again.
